Just come back from a pub quiz in Washdyke. Lots of frequent flashes along the Alps.
Warm day here today with not much wind and a maximum of 25C.
Fine this morning but high cloud layer developing from the NW and thickening up during the afternoon.

Overthrow rain has moved out to the east and cloudy and humid. Sadly, not looking very thunderstormic as forecasted. :(

Some interesting mammatus and nearly-mammatus cloud-forms to the north and east at the moment.
Also a nor'west arch.

18.8° and slight easterly breeze.

Some good brief rainfalls today, including a heavy shower right on sunset with a bright rainbow 🌈.
Tomorrow not looking quite as good as it originally was, but still a risk there more or so slightly inland Darfield westward is where the stronger convergence will be.
Just a brief shower or two for the city as the wind shifts from SW to NE.

There is a good strong front and associated trough for Monday lunch time which is worth keeping note of, could bring thunderstorms on the wind change.

High cloud overnight with a bit of electrical activity along the Alps.
Nothing much happening here today, sadly. Disappointing forecasts. Skies not looking at all thundery. Might be a better chance tomorrow?
Overthrow rain from around midday for a while this afternoon with 4.5mm for today, then slowly clearing up and becoming fine this evening. Not much wind, if so light and variant. 20.6C for today.

Came across this post on Twitter whilst searching for UK events - it was posted on 7th March so probably refers to a FC/WS on the 6th. There is a short video of what looks like a WS further down the thread. Not sure of the location.

Am I right in thinking that Brian used to post on here?

^ Yes, although Brian actually posted that pic on Mar 08 NZDT (Wednesday morn), so it was taken on Mar 07 NZDT (Tuesday). :>
Can't see the video though?

Apparently there was a tornado reported in Greymouth yesterday?

Active front about to hit west Auckland in the next hour or two. Already plenty of T-storms up Dargaville way...

Seen the odd nearby flash here, closest strike in months

Surprised there's a heavy rain watch, front is too fast moving to accumulate much. Looks likely we'll get less than 5mm from the current radar

Yes, those T-storms kinda fizzled out by the time they reached Akld apart from a couple of strikes west of Waiuku just before 10am.

A mere 2.4mm here.

Some parts of the North Island catching Tstorms.
Less than 2mm here. Current Auckland dew point is 20C, the first humid weather for a while.

GFS outlook has a lot of anticyconic influence to our weather.

A nice line of storms forming along the foothills of Mid and South Canterbury this afternoon. Conditions appear to be far more ideal for storms today than they were yesterday.

A splendid pyrocumulus cloud visible to the south.
The storm-clouds near the foothills looking more developed.
South-easterly; 21.1°C, sunny spells.

Here's photo of that PC cloud from the Downs in Geraldine.

The convergence was where I expected it to be today, had a brief light shower at work around 4pm and heard some distant thunder.
Looks like you caught a few storms today Richard, it has certainly been the season for inland storms.

Mondays front should produce a good gust front with thunderstorms possible on the wind change, looks to be around mid morning.
We haven't had too many gustos this season, definitely shows the shift to El Nino.

Lots of instability this afternoon but not producing anything here, might of been more so further north.
I don't know why MS put a Severe TS watch out as it didn't look like anything severe from my observations.
Anyway 21.4c the maximum for today with SE sea breezes fuelling the clouds inland today.
Some pictures I took today.

Today always the day for inland Canterbury this week. Models did good job at consistently plotting storms for today since monday

Yes. I don't know what the fuss was about yesterday's thunderstorm outlook. I would of given yesterday nothing but MS said moderate.
No surface heating and skies were flat. No instability like today. Thunderstorms along the Alps were moving north not out across the plains.
Today's clear skies and onshore SE sea breeze created the instability to form inland and hence across the plains from the front that moved north yesterday.
