Yes. I don't know what the fuss was about yesterday's thunderstorm outlook. I would of given yesterday nothing but MS said moderate.
No surface heating and skies were flat. No instability like today. Thunderstorms along the Alps were moving north not out across the plains.
Today's clear skies and onshore SE sea breeze created the instability to form inland and hence across the plains from the front that moved north yesterday.
Good to have run into you today John, I was telling John today that the cells that did develop were small but intense, missed here by a few kms but our daughter who lives 7km had one pass over, I will try and find out how much fall in what was about a 10min cloud burst, there was pea size hail which is a big as it gets around here.

Good to run into Richard at the Mayfield show. He said the thunderstorms showers were short but quite intense yesterday, hense a MS release of a STW over parts of Canterbury yesterday, especially north of here.
Anyway, a nice fine day for the show with a light NE .
Enjoyed the piggy races.
Today's maximum was 24.4C.

Tomorrow mornings SW change is a short sharp trough for the south island. Could be a nice southerly buster / gust front for parts early morning. Low thunder chances though

Not by any means a strong change here, just a run of the mill SW change, pretty boring really.

Often these chances tend to be more coastal

Got reports from a friend at North Loburn that during Fridays storms lightning struck a local 150 year old Sequoia Dendren and only half is still standing, asked for photos

This rain is certainly more persistent than hoped for from a Test cricket at Hagley perspective.

Surprised to hear rain on the roof right now. Radar shows a decent heavy shower moving across the coastal part of the plains.

Interesting wee development along the South Canterbury coast around the Rangitata Mouth area this evening. Also there were some showers way out to sea as well.
Anyway, today, it came onto rain overnight in the early hours of this morning with a wind change here around 7am with rain this morning.
Gradually clearing away from noon and becoming fine and sunny this afternoon. 5.3mm for here today.
Quite a cool morning with figures from the southerly change only in the single figures with today's minimum of 8.1C recorded around 10am this morning. 17.1C was today's maximum recorded this afternoon around 3.30pm.
Fine and calm evening.

Spending the weekend on a friends yacht watching the SailGP in Lyttelton Harbour. Looking forward to some consistent northerlies that will produce some great racing and hopefully some sunshine.

Really variable winds on the harbour this weekend, it will be a stern test (no pun intended) of sailing skill and forecasting technique.

On the 10th of March at around 2pm I was volunteering with a flood cleanup crew in Puketapu (west of Napier) when an awesome thunderstorm began to approach. It rolled over like an intense Wellington southerly front and became quite gusty. Then there was heavy rain for at least 20 minutes with plenty of thunder and lightning. All of the nearby land that was covered in silt immediately began to surface flood and same for some streets in Hastings. A tree was also struck by lightning in Hastings
