Glimpsed a lightning flash, maybe ten sec. till thunder.

Don't like the look of that radar at all.

The core of the storm appears to have just missed Ashburton (based on new radar scan).

Didn't come to much here but skies certainly looked turbulent for some time, just some light to steady rain.

I've seen a few photos and videos from the community pages in Nelson and Motueka which show pine trees snapped halfway up.
The damage looked to be quite a big area and quite wide too.

Coming onto rain here now from the north.
Any thunderstorm activity looks very so more unlikely now even so, well, it looked unlikely in the first place for here despite the forecasts.

Here are two pictures I took just from my own place looking inland from rolleston as the front was coming in.
Iv never seen a gustfront like that coming from north to south. Something you see with a vigorous SW change in Canterbury but not from the north.

It stretched all the way from north to the south/ inland looking towards Mt somers in ( these photos)

Interesting afternoon. Got a down pour and heard a clap thunder as it passed over.

That gust front came through north Loburn this afternoon as well, so unusual, it produced a moderate micro bust of wind from a heavy shower around Mt Gray

Interesting day with the downbursts in Nelson and overnight in east Auckland yesterday causing damage associated with tornadoes.
No photos or reports of actual funnels from the downburst storms so I'm going with that. Interesting gust front moving south over North Canterbury and ChcH from the pictures from Razor and Mikey but weakoning before it got past Ashburton as it come against the clagg we had this afternoon.
It came onto rain from 5pm with 3.1mm falling. Overcast but mild today with it getting to 17.1C. Not much wind and calm this evening.

Its more unusual for the Canterbury Plains than Amuri, over the last 20 years Ive noticed that over half the storms here come from that NW-N direction. I was amazed there was no thunder yesterday because it was so dark behind the fast moving front, 10km from the mountain and you couldn't see it as the rain was that heavy.

Strong language coming in from Metservice in the latest Severe Thunderstorm Watch:

Metservice wrote:Area: Buller, Westland

Period: 12hrs from 6am - 6pm Tue, 11 Apr

Forecast: An intense band of rain with embedded thunderstorms is expected to move east onto the South Island today, affecting Buller and Westland north of Harihari. Some of these storms may be SEVERE with damaging wind gusts and tornadoes from 6 am to 6 pm.

Tornadic wind gusts can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous. If any tornadoes occur, they will only affect very localised areas.

Should severe weather approach or if you feel threatened, take shelter immediately.

Issued: 7:52am Tue, 11 Apr
Next update: 1pm Tue, 11 Apr

Area: Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo, Taranaki

Period: 6hrs from 2pm - 8pm Tue, 11 Apr

Forecast: Rain with heavy falls is expected to spread south over the north of the North Island late morning and during the afternoon. Thunderstorms are expected with the rain. From Taranaki, across Waitomo and Taupo to the Bay of Plenty and northwards, there is a moderate risk some of the thunderstorms could become SEVERE. These SEVERE thunderstorms if they occur could bring localised downpours with intensities of 25 to 40 mm/h, and tornadoes.

Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.

Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Helicity and Shear levels tonight are very high with 70knots worth, couple that with the instability we have got = high likelihood for Tornadoes

There also appears to have been a waterspout at 8am on your Tuesday 11th April in Titahi Bay - roughly 20km to the N of Wellington? This was posted in the last hour.
