T-Storms & Tornadoes - Apr 9-13

Unread post by spwill »

The high cloudiness cleared out early here for a fine sunny day, max temps in the low 20s.
A lot of instability showing in the modelling for later tomorrow around the upper North Island, thunderstorm activity on the cards tomorrow evening.

Here's this morning's TS update for this arvo/evening's active trough. MS maintaining a moderate risk for the upper North Island for T-storms, strong winds, hail and the odd possible tornado...

The instability numbers are good in the GFS, thunderstorm development will come down to how good the lifting mechanism is later today.

More thunderstorms in the modelling for Tuesday.

Not too bad in Christchurch yet up around 35kmh but I'm sure will pick up into the afternoon.
Abit of instability about for most of Aotearoa tomorrow and today further north, an upper trough crosses down from the north tomorrow afternoon bringing heavy showers and a risk of thunderstorms on the plains.

Skies looking dark and heavy looking as the evening settles in.
No wind. The calm before the storm, maybe?
Interesting to see what happens tomorrow with the ULT and associated systems as they move across from the west?

That line off the Manukau looks pretty nasty but this system may miss populated Auckland which I'm sure few will mind given what's happened this year so far. Looking like will get something more intense here in the next hr.

Looks like a tornado event for parts of South Auckland earlier this evening. Looks less damaging than the Papatoetoe tornado 2 years ago.

Really interesting to see that as there weren’t any active thunderstorms around at the time as far as I’m aware. Picked up almost 10mm yesterday evening.

I seem to remember the Albany and Papatoetoe tornadoes were from non thunderstorm Cbs.
With last night's event the damage path is quite long and is about a house or two wide so looks like a tornado. There was another tornado in the East Tamaki suburb just 2km away in 2020 and nearby the Papatoetoe tornado in 2021.
I had a look at the damage path this morning and will post some photos. Damage is light but still a bit of a clean up for those affected.

I went for a short drive this morning and had a look. You can clearly see a narrow path of damage. There's a NZ Herald article, with a video that shows where damage has been reported.

Quite an active trough coming down from the north, reports of lots of lightning activity and torrential rain in the upper south Nelson etc.
Reports of a Tornado too unsure where, power out from Golden Bay to parts of Nelson.

Thunderstorms in a torrential band moving into canterbury now, currently sunny 19C with building clouds.

Intense rain here at Pokéno near Bombay. Just had a very close lightning strike, the lightning flash and thunder at the same time.

That possible tornado was in the Upper Moutere area (between Motueka and Richmond) at around 1:20pm...
