Yes I thought that too. Raining a lot harder here than the radar would suggest.

37mm now last hour and still coming down. My record of 43mm in an hour last March may be under threat...

Just heard a dump of thunder here at work in west Christchurch, rain starting to pick up with big fat drops.

Peaked at 48.6mm in an hour on my station. Hopefully that's the worst of it - seems to be a good 4-5 hours earlier than expected though

State of Emergency declared in Auckland.

I see Whenuapai has recorded 79mm so far today, including 35mm in the hour to 11am.

Good to see they’re not asleep at the wheel like they were in January. Everything I’m reading for MS and Civil Defence suggests there’s lots more to come later.

Going by radar it looks as if the worst is through. But looking at satellite it still looks to be a while until the front will pass. Will be interesting to see what happens the rest of the arco

MS says a further 86.5mm to fall in Auckland this afternoon. Mind you that 48 hour graphic is wildly inaccurate IMHO

With the January storm we had 265mm here for the day, Today we have had 61mm here, it is still raining but a long way short of that historic day.

Yeah, some pretty intense falls here today - 68mm in the last 3-4 hours so far, probably more just east of here.

Were there any storms in the high risk zone at all today? Seemed unusually quiet lightning-wise given the high risk that was forecast.

Rain clearing up here now, 84mm for the day

Probably not. Check up on MS Transpower lighting site to find out, which should free to the public :-w

84mm here so far today also.

Of the 14 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings MS have issued since about 10:30am so far today (which usually state that their "weather radar detected a line of severe thunderstorms"...), I've only seen the inland Whakatane one at about 6:30pm on the free lightning detectors ... :-k

Apparently a tree was struck by lightning somewhere earlier today, not sure where though?

P.S. I see Whenuapai just hit 100mm so far today...

A few more heavy showers moved across here this evening, currently up to 95mm for the day.
I didn't notice any lightning activity on the trackers today , it was warm in the upper levels today.
My guess is there will be lightning southwest of here in the morning and possibly over Auckland later tomorrow.

Coming onto heavy steady rain here now, not the low cloud and drizzle that MS said in their forecast here for today.
...anyway it was a generally cloudy day with thick mid-range cloud and north to NW winds giving a mild maximum temperature of 19.1C.
Southerly came through around 8pm with the associated low stratus cloud moving through.
Some light rain this morning.

Certainly was some incredible mamatus cloud over Canterbury tonight. Best iv seen in NZ.

I see very heavy rain in south Canterbury right now and moving up to mid Canterbury.

Great photos there Mike  Raining here but it has suddenly eased off, not expected as I thought we would avoid the rain that they experienced in Auckland/ Northland /BOP and the West Coast. Obvious it was overflow across the Alps from the north to NW.
Lots of colour in the radar imagery which I think would rain intensity rather than thunderstorm potential as what MS released in it's Severe thunderstorm warnings for today up north,
Could be thunder potential for here tomorrow as the cooler air moves north into this warm moist flow from the north.
