Easy for me to say but what a stupid decision it was to let that trip go ahead. I feel for the family and the entire school community.

Yes, you'd think schools would have learnt from past mistakes - very sad. :-(

Mostly a moderate risk for northern and western parts for today...

MetService Thunderstorm Outlook

Several troughs are expected to cross the North Island during today. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the west from Northland to Kapiti Coast, including Coromandel Peninsula. These thunderstorms are expected to bring localised heavy rain of 10 to 20 mm/h, strong winds gusting 80 to 100 km/h, and hail of 5 to 15 mm diameter, although the hail will be mainly in the evening. Note, the moderate risk thunderstorms will continue through the afternoon from Waikato to Whanganui, but ease to low for a time in the afternoon elsewhere.

There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms about northern Marlborough, Wellington, Horowhenua and Kapiti Coast this morning, and there is a risk that a few of these thunderstorms could become SEVERE bringing localised downpours of 25 to 35 mm/h. A thunderstorms WATCH is in force with respect to this.

A moderate risk of thunderstorms is expected to spread east across the Bay of Plenty from late morning and in the afternoon, bringing localised heavy rain of 10 to 20 mm/h, and strong winds.

For Westland, Buller and western Tasman, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms, bringing heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 20 mm/h and hail of 5 to 15 mm diameter. However, at night the risk of thunderstorms in southern and central Westland clears. A low risk of thunderstorms extends over te Southern Alps and to Fiordland.

In the east of the South Island, a low risk of thunderstorms extends from Banks Peninsula to Dunedin from afternoon.

No other thunderstorms or significant convection in other areas.

It surprises me all these media claims of tornadoes with no actual video or photo's, considering almost everyone has a smartphone which can take pictures.

At the moment at Parau Dam, Lower Nihutipu.
Waterflow is not excessive.

Satellite pic shows Cbs and thunderstorms developing over the warm Tasman sea as the cold air comes north, our western coastline will be most at risk for thunder/hail later today/tomorrow.
The start of the cold season thunderstorm season here. May -September are the months thunder is most likely to be heard over the Auckland metro area.

The Mamatus last night was very impressive. Shows the turbulence high up.
Very patchy today as to be expected, but will change overnight as the southerly really ramps up.
The latest surface models actually have the low now deepening to 962hpa in the Southern Ocean. Should see a window of gale force winds especially by the morning.

Yes, I think that's what RODALCO was referring to (see my earlier post)... ;)

Re the lack of any photos/videos, probably because the occupants of at least one of the two damaged houses were still in bed during said tornado's pre-dawn raid. It also looks to be a pretty isolated rural area with other neighbours some distance away. The drone/damage pics, etc do look fairly consistent with an isolated tornado though?

Very low barometer peak today. Down to 981.9hPa here. Could of been lower close to the actual low centre.
Interesting day here weather wise when that, if in the tropics, or sub tropics, the weather would be quite different

That was fun. A couple of nearby flashes almost instantly followed by huge cracks of thunder. Some of the loudest I've heard in a long time. Good squally shower as well but no hail here
