Looks as though it might be a fine and settled start for May here, but with a bit of rain up north and over to the west as a trough slips south around a blocking high centred around the Chatham Islands. 8-o

Hit 20.0C dewpoint here not long ago, a first for any May in my records.

There's an ominous looking convergence zone for the upper to western north and/or upper south in the outlook for Wed night/Thu, I guess its impact will depend on where it lines up and how long it stays in one place. I'm in Taranaki for the week so might get to see some decent heavy rain from it (compared with the usually uninteresting weather of the Manawatu).
Crazy warm temperatures in any case, hard to believe it is May? I think March was cooler.

Wednesday into Thursday does look ominous, a very slow moving active frontal feature.
Feels like the tropics tonight with the dew point near 19C.

18.3C min here overnight. Warm nights here to stay for a while... not the kind of thing you expect to see in May!

Looks like the main dumping ground for rain next 3 or 4 days will be just west of here.

23.9, the May record in my station's short history looks to be 24.3 on May 1st, 2018. EDIT: now 24.6, so broken already.

Currently 21 degrees C here with a moderate north easterly - ridiculous for this time of the year!

Yes it’s very warm in ChCh city tonight. Crazy for evenings to be so warm.

Totally insane  19.6c here at the moment going up from today's maximum of 20C this afternoon.
Light northerly blowing this evening. Lit the fire early this evening but now it's gone out.
Fine day here today with some high cloud. Low cloud hanging around the coast though this morning.
Good to see the revamped Rain radar back on line in Wellington. There was something on the news on TV One this evening about it.

Hamilton Aero and Ruakura also smashed their previous warmest May temp records yesterday with 23.5C and 24.3C respectively.

Hamilton Aero's previous record was 22.5C *[Edit] set in 2018, from records since 1971.
And Ruakura's previous record was 23.5C also set in 2018, from records since 1906.

Decent agreement with my station then, with previous record being on the same day. The old records from Ruakura contain some extremes both hot and cold so wouldn't been surprised if a 24 or 25 in May had been recorded way back, but not then.

Yes, it has been a fine and warm day here, as in other parts of Canterbury today. 22.5C here for today with northerly winds.
1.3mm from an overthrow rain shower from the west this morning.

Both GFS and EC are hinting at a low pressure system/cold air collision over Canterbury next Thursday/Friday with low level snow and 40-60mm over a wide area. We will have to wait until we get closer to the event to lock anything in but at the moment heavy snow to 400m asl and maximum temps of 7-8C for lower areas seems a good possibility...

A few more sites have broken their warmest May temp records:

NIWA's Invercargill Aero site with 23.8C yesterday smashed its previous record of 21.7C set in 1924, from records since 1906.

NIWA's Cromwell site with 24.0C yesterday just tipped its previous record of 23.9C set in 2016, from records since 1950.

NIWA's Queenstown site with 22.4C yesterday beat its previous record of 21.7 set in 2000, from records since 1930.
And MetService's Queenstown Aero site with 23.0C yesterday smashed its previous record of 21.3 set in 1979, from records since 1969.

And on May 1st, NIWA's Whanganui, Spriggens Park site recorded 24.3C, also just tipping its previous record of 24.2C set in 1956, from records since 1937.

2.1C over record for a station with a long history is massive.

3 torrential downpours in kerikeri this morning. Trough has moved eastward against the forecasted westward drift. No thunder yet which is surprising given the intensity. Must be a lot of warm air aloft although some lightning showing up further north .
