Lightning flashing away to the south of here as we walked to the pub for the evening's pub quiz.

Back home from the pub where we got 4th out of 10 teams. One question that did "pop" up in the quiz was, what does, in meteorology, POP stand for ?
I had never heard of it before but I said Potential of Precipitation which they gave me the correct answer.
....anyway, today was an interesting day under very low pressure. Rain this morning gave way to a fine and sunny afternoon but cloud moved in later this afternoon with some lightning flashing away to the SE this evening from a cloud mass moving away to the NE.
No wind at all. I noticed fire smoke going straight up in light ups this evening.
Cool day despite the sunshine, only 12.1C. 15mm of rain for today, most of it falling around midnight.

Just got woken up by a deep long clap of thunder, going by the lightning app and radar it looks to be around Hallswel.
Has been very heavy rain with possibly some hail too. The Southerly is very strong and blustery.
Another peel of thunder now 😊.

Same here in the CBD, haven’t heard thunder that loud in ChCh for a long time. Pity it was over so fast.

More thunder/lightning here and around the city at about 1:30am and 3am this morning.

Got down to 10.4C here at about 4am - first time it's been below 17.0C this month...

Unusual to see Ardmore Aero recording gusts to 115 km/h in the hour to 10pm last night... 8-o

There is a quite nice video on Stuff of the Sky tower being struck by lightning.

A photo here of lighting over South Auckland last night. I set up for lightning shots after the storm had left here because of wind, rain and hail.
More lightning/ thunder observed here around 2-2.30am

Metservice saying Christchurch only had 14.4mm of Rain at 7am but the flooding I saw along Brougham st and other streets this morning on my way to work says otherwise. Feels like 25mm+

Heard one of these flight go by last night on its way back to CHC:
Blizzards and heavy snowfall have led to at least two flights being turned away from Queenstown Airport.

Queenstown had 48.4mm overnight, should be some decent snow higher up on the Mnts.

Sheltered here from the SW change overnight but picked up a quick shower bringing 3.2mm, now partly cloudy with a cold wind, yuck.

Received a very heavy hail shower around 5am enough to whiten the streets slightly, didn't hear any other thunder apart from the two rumbles.
Lots of surface flooding out there with crews out unblocking drains, slowing the traffic right down.
Probably a combination with leaf clogged drains too.
Showers starting to retreat to Banks Peninsula now as expected, still very chilly on 6C though.

That's really unusual for a more inland site! Wondering if the line produced a localised microburst?

This was Arrowtown at 8am today at 420m altitude. Main amount of snow hit between midnight and 3am. Just annoyed my rain bucket looks to be clogged from the other day :(

Yes massive thunderclap at home around 4am, thought it was never going to end. On par with the great night storm the other week, although didn;t last as long probably only 3-4 other rumbles followed.

Some really good rain, 39mm at home in Halswell. I see on the Ecan site there are 40-50mm recordings at stations around the Port Hills and surrounds

Didn't notice any thunder or lightning in St Albans, just heavy rain and maybe hail. Fresh dusting of snow on Mt Herbert.

Had hail about 30 minutes ago in Titirangi. Nice anvil thundercloud sitting out West, seen from the motorway. Will take some stills of my video camera.

An interesting day here considering the consequences with not much rain here overnight and early this morning as most of the weather moved north out to sea. A mainly fine day with winds from between the west and south and scattered cloud moving across from the south. No snow around here.
Wind becoming variable and light this evening.
11.7C the maximum for today with only 0.7mm of rain.
