Yes there are rules for drone use in NZ, which I keep up to date with. I have 7 acres so my drone stays within my boundary, I'm more than 4 kilometers away from nearest airport. My app for my drone has a warning feature about restricted airspace, and it is also governed to 120m max height which is the maximum height allowed in NZ.
Unfortunately, other drone users spoil it for us that use our drones correctly and within rules.
Yes, some other drone users have spoilt it for everyone. Looks like you have a great place to fly your drone.

Interesting about drones. Maybe a separate topic is needed for this.?
...anyway an interesting day here in which I thought nothing much may happen. Obviously a good ULT.
Fine this morning but clouding up this afternoon to rather heavy looking skies resulting in a spectacular mammatus display here around 5pm.
Wind wise it was calm for much of the day but a gusty WSW did spring up around 4pm resulting in leaves blown around the place.
Only 0.2mm falling here from the thundery showers with hail forecasted but obviously those showers did fall in scattered places around South Canterbury and out in the Canterbury Bight. 14.3C the maximum for today.
Another mammatus shot.

Missing all the rain lately that coastal Canterbury has been getting, this morning we barely got enough to wet the concrete, so different to this time last year

Frontal activity moves across the Auckland area during the overnight hrs Thursday/Friday. Clearing conditions here before sunrise. There is some thunderstorm risk here in the early morning. Upper level temperatures are cooling , the Coromandel and BOP look more in line for thunderstorm risk.

Tweet from MetService showing just how wet it has been on the North Island. The attached graph, copied from the tweet, is the cumulative rainfall figures for Auckland Airport from 1964 to the current year. Even excluding the historic event in late January this year, the annual figure would still currently be at the top of the range.

March and April were average to below average rainfall
A lot of the rain here this year has been from slow moving cumulonimbus, big hourly totals.
Top hourly falls at the airport were 71mm and 60.4mm..

^ Yes, so far this year Auckland Aero has recorded 954mm, which is unprecedented. The Auckland Anniversary Weekend event at the end of Jan accounts for over 300mm of that (incl. 258mm on Friday Jan 27). Also notable was the 94mm it recorded on May 09.

Auckland Aero's average rainfall for the first 5 months of the year is normally about 403mm (previous record being 647mm in 1985). And its normal annual rainfall is about 1120mm. Last year it recorded about 1360mm, mainly due to a near record wet July.

Not nearly as impressive a lead in yearly rainfall here. But it is still the wettest YTD in my records since 2010 with 857mm. Currently 77mm in front of 2017.

Getting breezy from the NE here this evening. Looking at some pretty strong westerlies for parts on Saturday depending where the low pressure centre makes landfall.

24mm here, blue sky around now. With the northerly there should be some sheltering until the flow tends W/NW tomorrow morning. Looks like some heavy showers and gusty winds here tomorrow morning.

2020 - that was the year the dams were getting concerningly low if I recall correctly. Just 79mm locally in the first 4 months that year.

Having a low <980 HPa cross North Island would normally generate more talk on here and in media, I guess we have had so many storms. Looks as deep as Cyclone Dovi was when it crosses. Hopefully a heap of factors make it not as bad as Dovi was.

I have noticed in years past having a weather low down to 980 hPa pass over doesn't necessarily mean severe weather.
Can't remember the date but I can remember a day in Christchurch, have to check the diary, where it was a blue dome day with not much wind, but I can remember seeing lightning flashing away to the south of BP in the evening, probably from the southerly coming through later which was moving north out to sea.
On the other hand, I have heard thunder when the surface low was around the 1030hPa mark. :-k
