No strong cold signals showing in the models. Slow start for the ski fields. The developing El Nino doesn't seem to be manifesting in the atmosphere in our part of the world yet. Queenstown/Wanaka and Ruapehu will be hoping for a change soon.

For Auckland we usually associate rain with mild weather but not the case last two days, has been rather cold for our location.
Some thunderstorm activity for BOP overnight, looks active over the sea just east of there currently.

Rain/violent drizzle positively hitting the north-facing windows at the moment, can't think I've heard it like that from that direction before.
12.1°C and very dull and overcast.

Same in town. Looks like an above average rain month (finally!) if the models play out over the next 10 days

Yes I must say after getting back from ten 25c degree days in North Queensland it has been good to have some milder days that don't have a frost. All this rain/drizzle sure brings out the milder temps especially at night.

I know we should be going into El Nino conditions soon, this this weather at present is far more La Nina like, with a persistent northeasterly this week..

Significant pea sized hail shower in progress in Tauranga at the mo. Brr. Bet that will drop temps. Waiting to see if it results in hail fog.

Closest station to me shows it....

Another overcast but mild and claggy day with rain and drizzle overnight, this morning and evening with 12.2mm for today.
Not much wind, if so light and variant.
From a low of 9C it climbed up to 12.8C.
Ben is right in the above posting about it being La Nina-ish with these lows originating from the south and moving up north and forming around the upper North Island and anticyclones intensifying to the SE, with a resulting moist NE flow over the country.
Maybe we are experiencing a "El Nina" or "La Nino" situation ?

I see Mt Hutt is closed now with 40mm of rain over the weekend which has destroyed their snow base. The persistent northerlies are no good for snow making and I'm definitely noticing the warmer evening temps as well.

Last nights overnight low in Chch was 11.9c!

Models are a bit variable but it certainly looks like a relatively mild second half of the month thats for sure

GFS and EC were hinting at something out of the Southern Ocean toward the end of their runs when I checked last but definitely variable. Will be interesting to see when/if we get a pattern change to more El Nino type conditions. Ski fields will certainly be hoping for a change soon.

Late June /early July might come good for the Ski fields.
Should be a good August-October for them.

Enjoying some milder sunny weather here, some heavy rain on the cards here through the overnight hrs late tomorrow/Thursday morning.

Low cloud and rain overnight and this morning but clearing abit this afternoon but with low cloud/mist around Timaru where we were this afternoon.
Some sunny breaks this afternoon but rather a moist feeling in the air with 90% humidity and overcast with scattered bits of misty low cloud and higher cloud.
Today's maximum was 12.1C.

We have not heard thunder here so far this June, there is a chance tomorrow morning.
Northland and Coromandel have a better chance for thunder later today, Thursday into Friday.

I was hoping for more paki 🌞 today, but we've ended up with the easterly flow bringing the low cloud back in. Drizzle returns tonight to the city and the pennsinula.

The models have been so inconsistent lately its become actually very confusing. A forecasters nightmare no doubt.
This is due to the flip flop between northern and southern lows, or LA Nina to El Nino or neutral.
The models seem to change on a daily basis rather than every 2-3 days.

Hopefully the southern ocean will come to life through July and August.

Talk back radio taking calls from some pretty epic sounding T-Storms up north. Radar has some great red bands ( and not the gumboots)

Yes, that front moving down from the north has been very active this evening. Quite a spectacular light show in outer Gulf atm.

Basically, a mainly fine and moist looking sky for much of the day with hardly any wind. 13.5C the maximum.
Scattered low cloud. Boring day really.

It was an active night for thunderstorms over the North but no thunder heard here, 8.5mm at my place. An isolated thunderstorm chance persists for Auckland region today.
