Setting up to be a showery morning in Auckland looking at the radar. Nice to see more of a classic winter SW looking sky for a change.

Satisfactory day for whale watching today. Saw 2 Humpbacks and 2 Sperm whales today plus a big school of Dusky Dolphins.
Overcast conditions but no rain until after we got back to shore.

A mild finish to June. One or two nice looking Cbs in our skies last day or two, nothing thundery. Friday will see increased risk for thunder here.

This is a very interesting video, one thing I notice is there seems to be a primary flash, then a secondary not as bright a second later. Would lightning do that? Was there any lightning in that area this morning?

No tail, although the tail could be out of shot to the right. However, to my eyes, the second flash has exactly the same epicenter as the initial one, how is that possible with a moving meteor or one in two separate pieces when it came in?
Anyway, reason for posting in June weather was to ask if lightning could be eliminated as a cause. Discussion beyond that belongs in the off topic area.

Back home. Some fresh snow on the Inland Kaikouras from the rain overnight.

Doesn't appear to be much on the lightning detectors or radar at that time. Could be successive exploding meteor fragments from the same source? There was also a football stadium size asteroid that passed Earth a little closer than our moon today...

Mainly a cloudy day on the drive home with high cloud and fine weather to the west. A bit of snow along the alps.
Snow on the tops of the Seaward Kaikoura mountains this morning.

There was one quite loud roll of thunder here at 4.45am this morning.

Looking at Manawatu weather yesterday morning GFS had no thunderstorm risk.

Yes, I got woken up also at around 04.44 hours this morning. An enormous bang of thunder which even shook our house. Typical 1 flash and bang Auckland thunderstorm. Heard on the radio that it took out power out West as well.
Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

Anyone out there with a possible explanation for these UV Spikes? It certainly didn't happen this time last year and all my equipment seems to be working correctly.
Any critical thoughts appreciated.🙏

A generally fine day with light east to NE and scattered high cloud.
Today's maximum was 13.1C. Very low surface barometer readings, should of been really stormy if you believed those old barometer readings! 8-o

Been a month of 2 halves here. 12mm in the first half, 132mm in the second half (with a bit more to come today). No wonder the ground is so boggy at the moment.

Who would have thought there would have been activity down this way. There was certainly a lot of unstable clouds around this way also

Driving back from Temuka this afternoon, I noticed some unstable looking clouds towards the 4 Peaks/ Mt. Peel area but didn't expect anything to develop further to this, considering the time of year although instability would be more likely because of low surface barometer pressures.
There must of been some sort of a 'trigger' around, to get this thunderstorm development to evolve, as not noted by MS as they had no thunderstorm warnings for inland South Canterbury for this event.
