Heavy rain and snow on the way for Canterbury.

Your thoughts on precip amounts for Ashburton Tony? I’m not expecting snow but wondering if I need to prepare my property for surface flooding on Sunday?

40-70mm seems the likely range. Rain-induced snow melt early Sunday could push the Plains rivers up rapidly.

Haven't had a decent rainfall here for a while.
Interesting to see how the recently renewed soak pit out on the street will affect water flows in the street here after the TDC installed it about 3 months ago.

The drizzly overcast conditions from yesterday eased away overnight with a fine morning.
Gradually clouding up this afternoon with one or two showers around 4:30 pm and 6pm.
Today's maximum only 9.4C.
Becoming cold this evening despite weak cloud cover with frosty conditions late this evening. Below zero at 11pm.
Edit: With tonight's very low temperatures, dropping to below zero at 11pm, there could be a possibility of snow to low levels with the forecasted heavy rain falls, judging by the intensifying anticyclone slower transgression to the East/SE ?

It was certainly a hit an miss day yesterday with the odd isolated heavy shower throughout the day, but plenty of sun in-between too.
Enough you could count the amount of showers we had, with rainbows to boot.

Should be lots of rain this weekend, MS have thier warnings out now.
Could be close to 100mm for the city, just depends how much shadowing ocurrs.
It was about this time last year we had a big rainfall with plenty of flooding around.

Nice and sunny with a few fluffy clouds going up here. I noticed the radar around BP and Nth Canterbury looks interesting.
Maybe we'll get that down here this evening?

Anyone make sense of this Canterbury High Country forecast from metservice for tomorrow? Freezing level 900m south of Rakaia gorge and 1200m north yet only Snow to 1500m. Normally the snow level is several hundred metres lower than the freezing level not Higher.

Steady rain in town with some big sleet droplets, suggests the snow level must be about 200-250m.
The rain radar looks like really heavy rain, but is actually reflecting snow as an echo.

Some decent surface flooding in Ashburton at the moment. It hasn’t actually been raining here for that long (about 3 hours). McDonald’s carpark full of water and a number of streets covered completely.

That’s worrying being this event is just starting. I’m watching our security cameras at our business in Methven, so far no snow there and drainage system working well. Here in Rakaia it’s absolutely pouring down since early evening. Will check the rain gauge in the morning and report back in.

A lot of snow here in lake tekapo now... they said it will turn to rain early morning with heavy falls? Will this wash it away so I can drive to Mt cook? Looking out the balcony now it looks like 3-4 cm settled already.
Haven't really had much experience with snow and might have to be a 1st timer on putting chains on the car.

I think you should be right as there shouldn't be enough snow to close the road but check with the AA or other sources to see what conditions are like.

Looks like the Lake Tekapo Village motels....snow level forecast to left to over 1000 meters tomm but Tekapo sitting at 720 there could be 20cm plus on the ground by the morning

...anyway here in Geraldine, after the frost overnight, it cleared away this morning to become a fine sunny morning with light winds.
Cloud started to increase from mid afternoon and eventually moving in from the east late afternoon and evening and coming onto rain from 6pm.
Raining this evening with 7.4mm to 10pm this evening.
Today's maximum was 9.4C.

You get that quite often in Tekapo in wintry snow events in that area

We were down there last month and the advice I was given: “Chains are for getting you out of trouble, rather than driving into it”.

The authorities seem good at advising down there re caution/ chains / closed though.
