Re: General July Weather
A mainly cloudy day here but it seemed to try to clear at times.
Not much wind but a breezy southerly change moved through early afternoon with wind and some lower cloud forms.
Cleared away this evening but some cloud around.
Looked like some heavy showers with the radar showing red at times on the radar out to sea and moving NE from off the coast south of Timaru to around the BP area today. Don't know if any lightning strikes were recorded?

Re: General July Weather
Some nice lenticular and K/H forms in the rolling cloud form from the west this afternoon and at sunset including a "Blue Whale" cloud.
Put some foetoez up in my daily report after 10pm.

Re: General July Weather
First 17 days of July are running 1.0C above June so far locally. Still have not seen a single morning below 3C for the winter...

Re: General June Weather
Biking to work this morning in CHCH i could feel two air temps. Had the usual frosty air that stung a little, however mixed in their were veins of super warm NW air, was like walking out of a freezer

Re: General July Weather
Auckland airport has not had a single digit temperature for the last 8 days, a lot of our warmth is in the minimums. No morning even close to a frost here at my location this year.
A lot of model variation for the coming days, see how it all unfolds.

19 in Lincoln. Decidedly spring like these past few days. ordinarily that would make me suspicious this time of year.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 18/07/2023 22:14 Fine and rather mild day for July with it getting up to 17.5C for today.

Re: General July Weather
Early on this winter I thought we were heading for a colder season than what we've had for the last few years, but yet again it seems to be a crazy warm winter. We're getting daytime highs of 14-16 degrees here when normally at this time of year we'd be looking at 11-12 degrees. Despite the early signs of El Nino. At the moment I don't even need gloves on in the mornings when biking to work. In July! I wonder if the reduced sea ice cover around the Antarctic is partly to blame, as well as the ongoing high sea temps around NZ.
Meanwhile, all eyes on the models for this weekend onwards, something appears to be brewing for eastern NZ but exactly where and how much isn't clear as yet...

Re: General July Weather
Depends what models you look at or should I say which one comes out on top. They all seem to be changing so much lately.
Some GFS point to 50+mm for the weekend, others 5-10mm.
Either way the ski fields are going to get a gradual top up.
There's another potential cold surge mid next week if it stays there .
It's definitely still transition time. Getting the Northern feeds and southern lows. But the westerly phases are becoming more prolonged as they hit Te Wai Pounamu.
So it is changing but it's just gradual.

Re: General July Weather
After being a cool overnight but not quite a frost, a warm day eventuated with it getting up to 18.5C for today.
Scattered high cloud mainly cirrussy stuff bit otherwise fine and sunny with not much wind.
For July , the mountains do look bare, especially the foothills. With the very warm temperatures in the European continent and the USA, it looks like it's having an effect on the weather down here. Frosts haven't been so severe here, so far this winter.

The 10 day run on frosts in June has been hard on some plants in the garden, apart from that period they have not been severe hereNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Wed 19/07/2023 23:48 Frosts haven't been so severe here, so far this winter.

Re: General July Weather
Classic low level rain shadow from Banks Peninsula in southeast airflow. The moist layer is quite shallow so the rain is light and drizzly, and easily blocked by the hills of the Peninsula.

Re: General July Weather
It's been a grey overcast day, different to yesterday, with overcast skies and occasional rain or drizzle.
Easing later this afternoon but more showers this evening. Not much wind, if so from the south to SE.
Today's maximum was 8.8C with 11.7mm of rain.

Re: General July Weather
Your thoughts on precip amounts for Ashburton Tony? I’m not expecting snow but wondering if I need to prepare my property for surface flooding on Sunday?
