Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
Obviously did not hear it from the North Island, however caught my attention being only 6 days after the still unexplained flash and boom over the Manawatu area last week. The two security camera videos presented by stuff, line up perfectly, timing wise. Looked like the sky was fairly clear around there this morning, yet noone saw any sort of flash or anything in the sky?

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
What is interesting that the explosion heard in Feb 2022 viewtopic.php?t=6326 was heard over a 100km range, yet it appears this one was only locally heard around Woodend, could this mean it exploded closer to earth than in 2022, how far afield was the Manawatū one heard?.

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
Reports suggest it was mostly only heard around Fielding and not in Palmerston North ~17km away.

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
Social media reports of another Canterbury "sonic boom" this evening. Sefton webcam caught a flash through the clouds at the same time as shared on FB by Chris Lynch. Certainly not lightning.

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
This one being during darkess hours should have been picked up by the fireballsnz camera network. If they have nothing that will make 3 unexplained events in a bit over a week.

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
FireballsNZ do not have anything corresponding to this latest one, could be due to cloud cover. Interesting that this is not even making the general news now. Guess as long as these don't start being strong enough to start breaking windows etc as happened in Russia in 2013, they remain a curiosity only.

Oh it's still making the news...
'Astronomer dismisses meteor theory for North Canterbury's puzzling boom' - RNZ
I also noticed that in the Sefton video from last Saturday night there was only about a 2 second delay between the flash and muffled boom, which puts it only about 700 metres from the security camera. So maybe a little more terrestrial?

There was also another report on Chris Lynch's FB page of a "loud boom" heard in Rolleston that rattled their house a little around 9:30am on Saturday morning. However, according to the Acland Park FB page, it seems that "someone on a lifestyle block used a plastic bottle filled with petrol to help light their pile of wet sticks. Luckily no one was injured"...

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
Thanks Nev, had not seen that article.
That is a good point - the Sefton video is the first to contain both the flash and the noise, the speed of sound is ~340 m/sec so ~680m away.
The direction of the flash is quite discernible form the video, so if the location of that camera and what direction it is facing is known, this one should be quite solvable.
Did someone let off a professional grade firework out of season? Unusual to only be one flash/boom in that case however.

Re: Explosion heard north of CHCH
Obviously not. The times are also completely different. Just thought it was a good example of how something as simple as a petrol bottle on a fire can cause an explosion strong enough to 'rattle' nearby houses.
