Re: General August Weather
Abit of sleet and graupel falling at around 3am this morning, could hear the distinct tinging sound as it hit the windows.
Snow levels still very low down as expected across most of the region. Mountains and foothills look stunning.
There's a good steady band sitting over Banks Peninsula right now trying to edge into the city. Not sure how low the snow is but could potentially be falling to 200m there currently.
Wouldn't expect any snow now for lower down as it's starting to warm up.

Settling to sea-level around Taylors Mistake/Sumner, according to Facebook photos. Only sleet in St Albans, bar a few flakes earlier in morning.

Re: General August Weather
Had the slightest precipitation out near the airport which mainly fell as sleet earlier on. The moderate SW keeping that band confined to the coastline.
Good coating on the port hills that I can see from here though.
Photo was the SW change prior to showers last evening at work.
Looks like another polar injection next week but more moisture likely

Re: General August Weather
I don't think August 2023 will be amongst the notably warmer than average months like June and July were.

Re: General August Weather
A very messy stationary week ahead. With some strong high pressure holding to the north and south of Aotearoa and a series of complex lows over us.
This brings plenty of instability especially in the west of both islands, upper air temperatures remain quite cold.
Although the snow level might not be as low as last week, the alpine passes will see more snow.
There is a risk tomorrow afternoon for mid and south Canterbury for isolated thunderstorms with hail. Mainly south of Rakaia. This risk presents itself again by Wednesday but more widespread as a cold SE develops later on.
Not too often we see this for August in the east but it can happen.
