Re: General August Weather
See you had the chase truck ready to raw up to the downs John.
Ended up with 13.8mm of rain from yesterday system, nothing really of any interest apart from a 2 min heavy hail shower around 8.00 pm last night

Re: General August Weather
Had a ring around and found that the rainfall was mainly down your way, coastal areas north of Waipara were around the 15mm mark

Re: General August Weather
I was quite surprised to hear tiny hail mixed in the rain at 4am this morning. Never heard any thunder though.

Re: General August Weather
For the record, I have some daffodils and some Dutch hyacinths in flower now - a couple of weeks earlier than usual, based on my observations over the past ten years.

Re: General August Weather
Interestingly I had a patch of self-germinated daffodils in my veg garden that had no flowers last spring but this year its flowering now, yet this patch always flowered in Sep.

Re: General August Weather
Had noticed the Wattle trees went into flower from mid July this year, they are usually an August to September flowering time.
Also the Pinus Radiata are out with thier clouds of pollen early this year.
Signs of a hot dry summer perhaps
On another note 11 days of winter left, but we have possibly one our coldest blasts of the year coming next weekend.
Just more a heads up being this far out, but ECMWF has been hinting at this for quite a few days now. Also other GFS models are picking it up.
In the meantime let's have a taste of spring tomorrow with temperatures in the upper teens

Re: General August Weather
A rather mild and warm day down here with the day's maximum peaking out at 20.5C around midday today.
A fine day but with various forms of high cloud moving across during the day.
Not much wind, calm at times.

Re: General August Weather
A nice bit of rain earlier this morning with a strong SW, cleared away quickly as expected but the southerly has become strong again. Just the chance of a few isolated showers returning later on.
The polar blast for this weekend which was showing snow to sea level has changed abit. It initially warmed up on the models this morning but has since started to show colder numbers again.
Probably more snow to low levels at this stage through Sunday into early Monday, icy showers elsewhere.
As is always the case far from locked in until we are much closer.

Been a fairly chilly day up here, 10C at the mo. Bulk of the showery weather looks to be through now.

Re: General August Weather
Two similar days weatherwize with nothing much to report. Fine with a tad of frost and maximums around the 13C mark.
Not very interesting likely for the rest of the week which will be pleasing for the majority of people who like settled weather especially this time of year when the days are starting to get longer.

Re: General August Weather
Mean daily min this month is at 5.9C locally (first 22 days). Lowest I've recorded for any month was 5.7C in August 2011. Will be interesting to see if that gets beaten - looks like a mostly settled end to the month which means colder nights overall - including 3.1C this morning

Re: General August Weather
There has been a lot of cold air coming onto NZ from the southern ocean in recent weeks with another cold surge this weekend.
Will Spring be dominated by flows coming off the southern ocean or flow coming off a warming Australia?
