General August Weather

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looks like a NW flow over the country to start off August but not as severe as the "Big Blow" of August the First in 1975 of which I can remember quite well. Brought down many trees in the Balmoral forest of which many trees were railed out of Medbury before the Waiau Branch line closed in 1978 and sent to Timru for export to Japan.

An active cold system sweeps the country mid week.
Will watch for thunder and hail here on Wednesday.

We will probably see our coldest day of the year here tomorrow for maximum temperature.

The temperature went up and down overnight with surges of milder NW, but was around 12C at 7am this morning compared to -1c the previous morning.
Quite mild today up to 17C earlier, high cloud is increasing fast ahead of the incoming cold front.
There should be a brief period of NW gales over the region this afternoon before brief spillover rain, even for the city the winds will be on gale force.

Some relatively cold numbers there for tomorrow generally passing to the east, but will see snow to quite low levels especially on Banks Peninsula.
More widespread showers from afternoon with hail and sleet possible, maybe a clap of thunder as well.
More gales to boot except from the SW for coastal Canterbury.

Just come back from Temuka. Went through that red spots on the radar. Didn't seem to be that intense although there were one or 2 large drops that fell from the overthrow shower.

Interesting. It’s very heavy here at the moment. Actually I’d call it torrential.

8.2mm in my gauge at home. The heaviest downpours must have been very localised because the Ashburton MS gauge only reported 1.8mm.

The NW reached gale force at work in west Christchurch, for about an hour up around 70kmh. Enough to snap small branches and send a few corrugated panels flying.
Brief spillover looked ominous and was heavy for awhile too.

Not quite severe as the 1975 "Big Blow" storm, but the wind did spring up this afternoon with some strong gusts around 1pm here.
Fine overnight and this morning, but after the wind came through, it did gradually cloud over from the west with it coming onto rain about mid-afternoon with the winds easing. 3.9mm recorded from this overthrow rain.
Clearing up later this afternoon and evening but now some more rain looks likely to come through.
16.5C the maximum again for today.

The wind seems stronger here today that it did yesterday but no watch/warning… it has been dry here with the odd threatening cloud around from time to time.

Good hail shower here 10 mins ago, best I've seen for some time actually. Scooped some up that was starting to accumulate on the windward side of the house

Looking dark to the south - a few spits just now. 0C on Sugarloaf, so probably snowing on the Port Hills.
