Power still out here in Waimate. Been out since 4pm. Strong norwester for most of the day, but the southerly certainly packed a punch when it changed!
Cheers,

This is hands down the strongest SW I've ever seen, I do remember the 2000 windstorm but it wasn't as sustained as this.
A good friend in the Tai Tapu area is recording gusts of over 130kmh and much higher up the southern facing valleys.

Still windy here from the south to SW but not as strong as what could be experienced out along the coast.
No power loss here but it is out on many places around SC.
After a mild night and pleasant morning, It has been a windy day here, especially this afternoon with one or two strong gusts from the NW experienced here.
Fine sunny skies, but cloud more so this afternoon especially from about 3pm.
SW through around 5pm, but with no change in the sky. Windy for a start off then it seemed to of eased off around 7pm, but then there was the occasional gusts that came through here from the south, occasionally dropping away then a gust coming through.
Still windy this evening but much lighter and no more gusts as the barometer rises.
Today's maximum was 23.1C, just before the winds developed.

I see Lyttelton recorded gusts to 130 km/h last night. 8-o

Here'e an interesting little snippet from newshub yesterday...
https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zeal ... rries.html

Dylan, 18, was aboard a Jetstar flight from Auckland to Queenstown at 8:30am when the plane shook violently about 20 minutes from Queenstown Airport, resulting in passengers screaming in fear.

"Everyone on the plane was screaming. I was right next to the wing on the left side and the wing looked like it was going to break. It was shaking and it looked like it was about to snap off. Even the engines were shaking," Dylan told NZ Herald.

"The plane was going up and then dropping rapidly. I was airborne on my seat, it was just so wild."

After morning cloud cleared in Oamaru, it’s been a beautifully sunny and cloudless day in the Waitaki Valley and Mackenzie Country, without much wind . Apart from a few fallen trees, you wouldn’t know there was a severe windstorm the day before.

Down to 2.8C this morning - coldest it’s been since August. Also only the second time in my records a temperature below 3C has occurred in October (only other time was last year with 2.1C)

Probably what's referred to as 'ducting' when the radar bounces off an inversion layer producing a false image.

Hazy/smoky skies here again this morning. Makes sense with the flare up of the fires in NSW two days ago.

Will keep an eye on Sunday for some thunderstorm risk over northern NZ . Waikato/BOP look the main risk area, see how the models look tomorrow for heating and convergence.
An upper cold trough moves onto the South Island tomorrow but surface conditions lack moisture and will be cool.

Up in Belmont/Lower Hutt this WE for an in-law family funeral on Tuesday and then up to Auckland later next week.
No reports from Geraldine until we get back in the week after the election.
If anything interesting happens on out travels, will post it.

Looks like an isolated thunder risk Canterbury up to Wairapara tomorrow due to cold upper level conditions, convergence about the foot hills and a southerly front moving onto the lower North Island.

Wind convergence should lead to isolated showers and a risk of thunder this afternoon. There are two main areas for this.
One around Christchurch northwards where fresh Easterly winds gradually turn Southerly.
Although this area isn't a great risk.
Further inland to the north perhaps more near you Richard has the best set up for strong convergence.
Models have perked up a little in favor of this on the latest.

Currently Easterly here with some sun and low cloud developing in from the east.

Still blowing a westerly atm but can see the lower cloud to the south, so this wind will fad out and turn to the east within an hour or so.

Some reasonable buildups seem to be starting around here in Lincoln. I can see the potential, although I'm not sure theres much heating available today

I would of probably thought inland south Canterbury/ McKenzie country looked like the spot for thunder today. However there's a small risk inland mid Canterbury this afternoon but drew points are not very good. Cloud cover also another factor this afternoon will dampen the risk.

The Napier/hastings area looks like the spot for the eastern North island if anything for thunder tomorrow.
