Looks like a small storm cell has formed near Timaru and some heavy showers near the Mt Peel hot spot.

Now a heavy shower here in town, core of the cell appears to be just to the north east of me.

For sure. It caught me off guard and I had to retrieve the washing in a hurry! There’s obviously some sort of storm juice around today. It has been a mostly overcast, gloomy day here.

It certainly had more of an anticylonic look today than seeing punchy clouds into a blue sky, somewhat misleading to the weather eye
But you could tell the humidity was up today, it certainly felt very humid even on 14C.
The bulk of the current lightning activity is around Eastern Rakaia to Southbridge. It seems to be where a good convergence is.

Just light to moderate rain in town, but should be some healthy totals overnight.

A brisk southeasterly has arisen, a bit earlier than expected? washing billowing on the line.
As long as the humidity doesn't increase, should be a good drying-day still.
17°C and sunny, blue dome as far as I can see.

Ya, I see that. Brought the washing in a little while ago when I saw the temp. down to 15.something and humidity increasing.

It's been a warmer day than I was expecting, considering the NW never reached Christchurch overnight.
But it was moderate NW since about half 9 this morning, and up to 21C.
Brief Southerly shift for about 15 minutes, now it's a fresh NE.

Back into another round of very high winds on the weekend. Saturday in particular.

Up in Auckland for a few days before headings back down south again.
Nothing much of interest in the forecast for the time that we are here but never mind.

Much more settled conditions for thunder activity over north and south island to round out the week except a few storms on west coast more so on Sunday for their.
That NW really ramps up for Eastern parts sat morning, though! And through cook strait.

Interesting to see that the Salmon Run multi sport event has been cancelled for this weekend due to expected red warnings in Canterbury from MS. Surely that sort of information is released to the public by MS ASAP rather than deliberately last minute? Or perhaps the wrong wording used by event organisers?

Yes I questioned that on their page.

Keep an eye on Sunday for thunderstorm risk over Southland, Otago with a cold trough across the area,. See what the GFS shows in future runs for low level winds.

Yes I did see that risk actually. Cold troughs not quite making it into Canterbury as a whole yet

Hope so there Mike, from next week when we come home from up here in Auckland.
Been rather cool up here, even had to have the heat pump on here in Glenfield last night.
