Thunderstorms for western NZ on Monday but the risk is only low for Auckland and Northland with the weakening frontal feature there later in the day. Jason has already mentioned the thunderstorm risk for Canterbury later Monday.

A cool morning to start October on 0C, but the NW winds today will help assist the temperature to around 20C.
I presume the wind watches for tomorrow will be upraged to warnings today from MS. Some very high winds from the NW in particular and then SW later on.
Unfortunately the thunder risk has diminished.

I know as a region we've seen quite a few high wind days this Koanga so far, but I think tomorrow for most areas even coastal could see some damaging wind gusts.
Firstly the NW and mainly from 12pm until 4pm when they will ramp up prior to the incoming front.
Then the SW where coastal areas and Banks Peninsula could also see damaging wind gusts.
Tie down the tramp because here comes mad dog Nor west

Cool overnight but no frost here with the minimum being 1.5C.
A fine day but with billowy high cloud moving across from the SW.
Not much wind although a bit of a westerly did pop up this afternoon.
Today's maximum was 22.6C and it was still mild this evening, being 16.9C at 10pm.
Here's a picture of a HK cloud form in the above SW flow moving across.

Gradually building here, gusts pushing over 70kmh now in west Christchurch.
Some smoke in the sky to the west hopefully not a big fire.

Howling winds between Akaroa and Oamaru, especially on the plains between Ashburton and Timaru. Still very strong and gusty in Oamaru right now.

Air NZ has cancelled 80 flights around NZ today due to high winds. Getting excited for the southerly change early this evening in Christchurch

I notice that band of rain has made fairly rapid progress, about an hour from Oamaru at 3:30-ish to be around Timaru now.
Means it'll be quite strong when it reaches here... :-k

Now a gale southerly in Oamaru, and down from high teens to about 11C. Cloudy, but only a few spits about an hour ago as we arrived from the north.

A wind change came through here a few mins ago, went from a NW to a WSW. Its not the southerly that you are talking about Orion

Wind has switched SW here now with some steady showers, starting to get very strong.
MS have changed the wind warnings to 120kmh for exposed coastal areas tonight and 130kmh for Banks Peninsula.
In other words don't put your bins out until tomorrow morning.
Edit- now a long peel of thunder think it might be over the port hills.

Winds eased away now. Surface baro rising quickly.
From 985 hPa to 1032 hPa tomorrow, is a good rise as this low moves quickly away to the east.
Fine, sunny days coming up.
EDIT: Just after posting the above post, a strong more southerly gust came through. No change in the sky though.

Wow these are some insane hefty gusts coming through in southern Christchurch, I can feel the pressure shift in my ears.
Very loud roar outside on the trees, easily getting over 100kmh now.
Lights flickering got things on charge at the ready. Some suburbs in Christchurch already without power.
New Brighton pier station is recording gusts around 96kmh currently.

Chaotic scenes all over Chch going by Chris Lynch News. Trees down, fences down, power outages and so on. Certainly some very violent gusts here in Halswell. Amazing turbulent sky at dusk
