Ive been in CHCH today. Very entertaining drive back, Amberley is in a mess with lots of trees down with a caravan over turned and car rolled down the back at the top of the hill between Waikari and Hurunui. The strong wind has not long arrived here I'm told, no damage so far thankfully

Winds are actually stronger now than before and more W-NW rather than NW earlier.
Just watched a big maple get stripped from the top and rain down on the neighborhood.

Same here. Winds are as strong as they’ve been all day. Fire calls increasing.

Howling gales earlier this afternoon; then the wind eased, though still the odd strong gust. Went for a walk - saw where the wind had lifted part of the roof off Southern Cross Hospital on Bealey Ave.

Interesting to hear about the winds today. Sounds worse that the 2013 gales and the "Big blow" of 1975 8-o
Apparently the Coastal Pacific train was held up around the Scargill area as a tree was blown across the tracks.

Wind has risen again here and rain hitting the west and north windows.

Yesterday definitely not as bad here as, say, July 18 last year, I didn't like that one.

12.3°C at the moment, quite a good rain falling. Smell of petrichor drifting into the house.

Plenty of the more reliable private weather stations around here were measuring gusts of 140kmh plus, and most of those are not at 10m. The damage around the place is consistent with gusts to 150kmh.

Not surprised of those wind speeds, between Amberley Waipara has taken the most of the brunt. There was a 80+ year old blue gum up rooted east side of SH1 just north of Amberley, poor old tree would have endured many severe gale over its lifespan but couldn't stand up to that one.

Just got our power back on after 24h with out.
