Re: General November Weather
Lower cloud developed overnight but cleared away during the morning with it becoming a warm and fine day.
Light northerly winds turning more to the south during the afternoon.
Some weak bubbly clouds with "fists" going up along the foothills this afternoon turning to a what become a weak thunderstorm development, later apparently this evening.
Today;s maximum was 27.5C here. Urban heating!

Re: General November Weather
Was this as a result of a thunderstorm or an uplift of wind and moist air like you get over mountain ranges type cloud? ( lenticular) cool pic none the less

Maybe that same cell I was photographing and thinking it had great structure. I also took this picture as it approached (though in a weakening state) thinking is that a funnel but I wasn’t convinced since it doesn’t look like most funnel pics you see

Does look a nice picture, it was low level rotation along a wind convergence line over the city.mikestormchaser wrote: ↑Wed 22/11/2023 23:40Was this as a result of a thunderstorm or an uplift of wind and moist air like you get over mountain ranges type cloud? ( lenticular) cool pic none the less

Re: General November Weather
Auckland is prone to tornado, waterspout and funnel cloud sightings/events, it has a high number when you consider its geographical size. . The area Albany to Ramarama ( aprox 60 x 20km wide ) has had quite a few damaging tornado events over the years.

Re: General November Weather
Not so sold on this moderate risk this evening, the instability numbers are not high enough.
I'm guessing the abrupt cold air running into very warm air is one of the triggers, but perhaps a low risk is more warranted.
Dunedin and north Otago might see a better chance around lunch time.
See how the day goes.
Currently this fog is lifting and warming up very fast. Could we see 30C for the first time this season somewhere in the region depending on high cloud cover.

I don't see what metservice is suggesting for eastern SI today. Main risk for me today is north island Rotorua/ taupo region.

Re: General November Weather
A huge rain storm came in about 11.30 am in Dunedin, along with low level mist which made it very hard to see while driving home, thunder and lightning as well.

Southerly moved in about an hour ago with associated clagg moving in and cooling of temperatures.
No hope on storms for today, sadly.

Re: General November Weather
I think if any storms develop, they will be out to sea. Wind died down here and down to 14C. Clagg still in control
Definitely going to be a "Bleak Friday" tomorrow

Re: General November Weather
The SW change came through just before 6pm dropping the temperature quite pleasantly.
A brief spell of low cloud moved over as the temperature fluctuated, but is now much calmer with some building TCU forms to the south.
Probably nothing thundery but we should see some good heavy spells of rain overnight, and into tomorrow until about lunch.

Re: General November Weather
Finally come onto rain from 8pm, with drizzly showers turning to rain with 3.7mm falling to 10pm tonight.
A warm day initially with today's maximum being 27C. Northerly winds with scattered cloud moving across from the NW to west.
Southerly came through around 2:30pm with low cloud, temperature drop and stratus moving in, which hindered any chance of any storm development here which I wasn't really expecting and remaining claggy for the rest of the day.

Re: General November Weather
13mm overnight was much needed but I dont like the look of the snow on the hills which looks to have fallen to around 500m, dont want to get another frost now with some many frost tender plants now up.

Re: General November Weather
Woken to a partly cloudy day here with no wind. Radar shows a beefy chain shower set up off the coast, impacting Banks Peninsula. Forecast shows more rain and strong winds for Ashburton today. We will see if that eventuates. Perhaps the wind later on.
Edit 7.22am - wind has arrived

Yep, similar in Wigram. Arrived at work on the bike 15 mins ago and only dealt with some very light passing showers. Glad I didnt leave home later and be stuck in this!

Re: General November Weather
Gisborne region in the firing line tomorrow with an unstable onshore flow, some thunder possible. See what develops in the cold air over the central NI/BOP later today, isolated thunder risk showing.

Re: General November Weather
Some heavy showers about this morning and small hail too, might be a clap of thunder in some of them come mid morning once it warms abit.
Southerly is strong and squalls between showers, may become stronger by afternoon.
