The strikes are mostly intra cloud, the circles. The squares are cloud to ground strikes.

It looks like chc has the no storm void firmly in place. The action splits either side nicely. Ha!

Southerly certainly looked impressive rolling over the port hills, was quite strong when it arrived and is strengthening now as lower cloud rolls in.
Just a few showers here so far.
Could be some hefty gusts tonight especially around the coastlines and Banks Peninsula.

Super wild weather in Halswell right now. Gusty gale force winds and driving heavy rain. Red on the radar

Last nights lower cloud cleared away to become a mainly fine day but with lots of middle range cloud and week Cu forms and layers developing this afternoon. Becoming warm with light SE and occasionally a light NW wind would filter through. Today's maximum being 25.1C here.
The proper southerly change came through at 1745 hrs with it coming onto rain and then the clagg rolled in and it became overcast from then on and into the evening. 8.7mm of rain here to 10pm. No thunder heard as what was forecasted.
Some photos from today.

Ka pai for sharing the hand drawn map Mordor, it certainly illustrated why we ended up with the abrupt blow up with thunderstorms on the wind change this evening in some areas.
The positioning of the cold front and trough inbehind to boot with gale force winds, certainly made time for enough uplift in temperature shift.

This doesn't always happen given that there were no signs on the models that I could see for potential thunderstorms to occur.
But today's front certainly showed punch.

That was a pretty obvious dynamic set up for storm development in Canterbury. It wasn't looking very favourable from a thermal point of view, but the dynamics just managed to overcome that handicap.

Don't know about that. It was pretty useless down here but some diversity did produce something north of here obviously.
...anyway it was a cloudy and overcast day here with NE winds becoming moderate from late morning.
Talking to some people saying the usual "It's freezing"! with the cold NE wind keeping the temperature to 14C for today.
Clagg settling in late afternoon and evening.

Yes I agree John it wasn't a day I would of got "excited" about and while it did surprise me with reports of a clap of thunder it wasn't a day that looked all that promising. That is the point I think most would agree on.

Looking way ahead to next Thursday looks like storms for Canterbury but that's 7 days away so just a keep watch sernario.

Really liked your posts aswel hordur. Appreciate your feedback and explanations

Neat how the converging NE and SE sea breezes shows up on the radar.

Showing up nicely on the radar at the moment
Haven't seen that for ages.
Maybe a scenario for future convergence forms this summer, resulting into thunderstorms like in past years :-k

Well for St Andrews Day, the last day of spring, it seemed like a Scottish day with low cloud and cool light winds, trying to clear from the south but with Clagg moving in and coming onto rain from 8pm. 5.4mm to 10pm.

MetService November 2023 Brief Summary - O Nino, where art thou?

Following on from a September and October which ran quite true to form for our climate drivers (westerly barrages, strong high-pressure anomalies in the Tasman Sea and low-pressure anomalies in the Southern Ocean), you can be forgiven for asking what happened to our strengthening El Nino in November, where pressure patterns across New Zealand didn’t respond to type.

Areas of high pressure were often slow-moving across the Southern Ocean during November with our classic westerly signal only showing up for a brief interlude mid-month. Instead, troughs digging southward from the tropics to the northeast of NZ were a recurring theme, and we have seen much more frequent showery southerly to southeasterly airflows across the country than normal.

This has driven another very wet month for the storm-battered regions of Tairawhiti and Hawke’s Bay; Gisborne Airport saw its 3rd wettest November on record. Wetter than normal conditions have also been observed from the Bay of Plenty to the Wairarapa, and in exposed pockets around Gisborne and southern Canterbury. These areas also saw the coolest temperatures compared to normal last month. Conversely, areas we might typically expect to be rather wet in November such as West Coast South Island have basked in much sunnier, warmer and drier conditions than normal. The majority of the South Island had a drier than normal November.

You don't often see Christchurch having the highest sunshine hours in the NIWA report.
