Re: Re: General February Weather
Quite a thick layer of high cloud here now which has dropped the temp down to 29. Moderate north easterly wind. I think we would have cracked 35 degrees if the cloud had stayed away.

Re: General February Weather
Did crack the 35 deg here (35.2), then a NW wind sprung up and now is 33deg

Got to 37.4 here mid afternoon, including a 6 deg jump from 31 to 37 when the wind switched from NE to NW.

Re: General February Weather
Thats certainly getting up there Tony, stubbies and singlet weather.
Even though that NE has been much stronger and dominant today the temperature has still pushed to 28C. I suspect it will be a warm night once the NW kicks in and drags the hot air across the rest of the plains.
Tomorrow certainly looks just as hot but perhaps more widespread with more of a Northerly flow and less high cloud cover predicted.

Yes, well that is hot or "Scorchio".
Very warm there in North Canterbury, but not as warm as that in South Canterbury as we only got to 29.4C today.
Various high cloud forms with another spectacular sunset this evening.

Some pretty photos from last evening.
A warm night here with a low of 21.1deg, but a cooler day today with this high cloud

Re: General February Weather
A warm night with a low of 18C, there is a thick nor west arch out there this morning although it is starting to open up to the west.
Should break off this afternoon as winds tend more NW rather than Northerly.
Many areas especially north of Ashburton could be up for 36 to 37C.
Lighter E-SE winds may develop south of Ashburton this afternoon.
Currently 22C with a light Northerly.

Re: Re: General February Weather
I have this feeling the high cloud is moving through earlier on which case things will get extreme again quite quickly. I see MS are suggesting 33 for Christchurch now

Re: Re: General February Weather
I'm thinking that this high cloud may hang around for the day.
Just got back from working down in the bottom paddock, been a light wind but every so often these really warm pockets of air would move through.

Currently 21.8 here with a gentle northerly. The high cloud is very thick but I can just see the NW arch with blue sky behind it coming across the mountains. We shall see how long it takes to clear.

Re: General February Weather
26 degrees here with no wind and thick high cloud. If the NW arch can get across before 1pm then mid 30s a chance, otherwise might peak at 32 or so.

Re: Re: General February Weather
This high cloud really is taking a long time to clear away. Blenheim now up to 32 at midday. Wonder if someone will beat the 37 degrees reached in North Canterbury yesterday.

Re: General February Weather
"Freezing" down here with 19C with thick NW Arch cloud and not much wind. 19C at the moment. Don't think it will be scorchio down here if the cloud clears or maybe?

Re: General February Weather
Seems that NIWA temperatures are much higher than MS ones. MS highest for yesterday was 34.3C recorded at Culverden, none in the 37 degree category. You don't hear of Riccarton anymore with the top temperature.Nev wrote: ↑Mon 05/02/2024 18:24 NIWA's highest temp today was 36.9C at Waipara West (Medbury also gets a mention in their summary below) ...

Re: General February Weather
This high cloud seems to have cleared north of CHCH city but is incredibly stubborn around the city currently. Usually the arch clears from the south. Think CHCH may even struggle to hit 30 now, as the northeasterly is picking up which will limit the temp.

Re: General February Weather
MS tweeted that the Hanmer Springs site they monitor recorded around 36C yesterday. Not all of the sites they monitor are reported on their website's daily summaries (mostly just towns and cities I think). Kawerau is another one that doesn't appear on their website, but often gets reported to the media.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 06/02/2024 12:59Seems that NIWA temperatures are much higher than MS ones.
