Wouldn't rule out a -5 degree frost Friday morning for chch. Record breaking may cold. These are July temperatures, even this morning getting down to the negatives.

The media should be coming out with record cold for may by end of week just as they like to with how 'hot' it gets

Chch Aero's lowest ever May air temp is -6.4C on May 29th in 2015, followed by -5.3C on May 26th in 2001, from records since 1954.

Received a call from my power company warning of possible power network failure due to load on the network either tonight or tomorrow morning due to the cold snap. I’m in Christchurch.

Thought it eas nice they called.

Yep. Colder than anticipated already in the city. Wonder if it will dip below -4?

I'd say it's a possibility it could dip below -4 if we are already seeing -2 at 9pm, considering temperatures usually reach a minimum towards sunrise, and the forecast was for a minimum at 5am to 6am.

Seems to have shifted back to -1C, usually is the case for the coastlines during this time of the night.
But also means it will drop very quickly between 5am and 7am.
A -6c on the cards :-k

Yep, just preparing for bed and it’s -4 at the airport at 10:40pm. I’m going to get up for a walk at 6am, see if we can break the may record.

It has been below 0 in Ashburton since 7pm last night but a sneaky NW wind has developed in the last few minutes which might save us from the brutal cold we were expecting. Currently blowing 20kph with a temp of 0.5 degrees C.

Similar in South Canterbury, dropped as low as -4.8 but warmed up now with slight NW, currently -0.3.

Chch Aero only had -6.1 at 4am but I heard a station in Riccarton(?) had -6.7?

If its based off chch aero its not a record. It warmed up quite quickly too, I left home (CBD) at 6:50am and it was already 1c

According to this MetService tweet posted a couple of hours ago, Christchurch Airport fell to -6.3°C. The graphic is for 5am and it is interesting to note that further south, both Dunedin and Invercargill were on +10°C at this time.

Further south there is a cloudy onshore flow , daytime temperatures will struggle to rise in a cold flow. 850mb temperatures going down to -4C today.

Can I suggest that we keep people's personal beliefs about climate change out of threads like this.

Here's a list of NIWA's coldest temps this morning:
On Facebook NIWA wrote: -9.7˚C in Cass (inland Canterbury) is the coldest temperature we observed on Friday morning

There are many other honourable mentions - too many to name them all!

-7.7˚C Medbury (Canterbury) [2nd coldest May temperature on record since records began in 1927]
-7.5˚C Waipara North (Canterbury)
-6.9˚C Balmoral East (Canterbury)
-6.6˚C Middlemarch (Otago)
-6.3˚C Appleby (Tasman) [2nd coldest May temperature on record since records began in 1940]
-6.3˚C Hanmer Forest (Canterbury)
-6.2˚C Waiau (Canterbury)
-5.9˚C Cheviot (Canterbury)
-5.8˚C Lake Tekapo (Canterbury)
-5.7˚C Clyde (Otago)
-5.5˚C Culverden (Canterbury)
-5.3˚C Cromwell (Otago)
-5.0˚C Rangiora (Canterbury)
-4.9˚C Taumarunui (Waikato) [equal-2nd coldest May temperature on record since records began in 1947]
-4.9˚C Mt Rupehu Chateau
-4.6˚C Ranfurly (Otago)
-4.4˚C Lincoln (Canterbury)

Auckland and Northland:
-2.2˚C Mangatawhiri [Hunua Ranges] (Auckland) [for parts of Auckland, it was the coldest May morning since 2014]
2.9˚C Whangārei (Northland)

Note that records at their Medbury site actually began in 2016, so their claim that 'records began in 1927' must be based on a combination of older sites in that general area.

Thank you and couldn't agree more. There are plenty of other channels for that. So long as we are still allowed to talk about science then thats a very fair comment
