Generally a fine day today after a rather cool start, not quite a frost here this morning but there could of been in some other places around here.

A touch of early Autumn this March. A typical March for Auckland has a lot of humid weather but not this year.

March 2022 Auckland airport mean daily min /max temperature was 15.8C-24.8C, March was a Summer month that year.

Impressive line of CBs sneaking up the coast off Canterbury at present. Banks Peninsula might catch the edge?

Yeah a band of heavy showers with small hail skirting along the coastline there, no thunder risk though.
Quite abit of TCU going up around here currently, so keep an eye out for showers to develop on the plains too.

Update to the above, it seems to be coming more inland and could well clip the city as well. Very dark skies aloft in Lincoln

You are right have just heard a deep rumble of thunder from out west near the airport.
Another cell looks to be developing just slightly more inland and heading directly this way, watch the radars.

Just a few spots here but mainly dry, with a wind shift from light SW to straight southerly.
Funny day for sure, might be more showers later.

Interesting this. Nothing here but partly cloudy conditions with some weak instability and some light showers.
Nothing on the thunderstorm forecast from MS for today. [-X

That was the best summer. I was swimming at the outdoor pool into April. March is still usually good for swimming but not this year :( Even some settled, sunny but cool days would be nice.

Updated short forecast mentioned thunder and hail for Canterbury, but nothing on the thunderstorm outlook.

I wouldn't have thought much would happen today either John however even though it did, it wasn't anything to be excited about. I did check the soundings for chch today and their was a touch of instability in the mid levels but only on the edge. Must of been just enough to surpass it

Yes I was surprised to hear on the RNZ news weather forecast, thunderstorms with hail fro Christchurch whilst driving back from Timaru this afternoon. It wasn't forecsted. Nothing much here but the odd occasion it was light raining with blue skies creating some rainbows. A generally partly cloudy day with light southerlies. Some light rain this evening.18C for today.

I've reflected on yesterdays surprise thunderstorm and I have to say it was an absolute cracker, brief but in the top few I have seen for sudden development and the sheer power of it. My university colleagues tell me that 15mm was recorded in 10 minutes on our local Uni Dairyfarm adjacent to the university

Some amazing stats there from yesterday Razor, I did notice the moisture gathered very quickly and sucked all the energy into one spot.
This also happened with the heavy showers last night, initially very widespread then formed into an isolated heavy band.

Certainly has been much cooler for March it's like someone has flicked the switch as soon as we got to Autumn.
I don't think I can recall such a cold start in March.
There might be a couple of days early next week around 25C with a building W-NW, but also getting gradually cooler again as the upper air changes.
A further 7mm overnight adding to 12mm from Fridays system, slight soil reprieve but a milestone to go to break the drought.

Yes. Unforecasted thunderstorms can be quite intense. I remember when just after we arrived here in Geraldine in 2017, we had an unforecasted thunderstorm here which cut power to the town for a couple of hours. I'll have to look up the date. AAron from Stormwatch took a video of it from the single lane bridge just north of the town.
