Cape Town Weather I Strong winds destroy over 500 structures in the Strand, Helderberg areas [5:16]
The strongest wind gust I could find (admittedly from a quick search) was 52mph at Cape Town International Airport on the afternoon of the 7th. Some of the local gusts seen on the videos were certainly higher than this. Cape Town had thunderstorms into the evening of the 7th and these may have produced some of the strongest winds.
Had a good thunderstorm departing Durban yesterday including a lightning shot on my camera.
Could of been related to the Cape Town storms, heading towards there tomorrow.
Photos when I get home.
Here's lightning flash that I recorded from that storm

At least 10 people in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces have died after flooding caused by torrential rains. Parts of the town of Tongaat in northern KwaZulu-Natal have been severely affected by a twister-like storm. The authorities have warned of more heavy rains in the coming days.
I love the expression 'tornado-like' that the BBC uses. I would suggest this was definitely a tornado and one of considerable force. Press reports attribute 7 of the fatalities to the tornado along with approx. 120 injured people.

Media in general, even in the US like to often stop short of officially calling something a tornado unfortunately when they obviously are, most annoying terms are 'tornado like' and 'mini tornado' which are used way too much, even when its not even mini
That was as clear as day a tornado and a bloody big one too, if it was rain wrapped, yer maybe call it a tornado like. Mainstream media is so full of *beep*
