Re: General September Weather
Midnight soundings from Paraparaumu and Whenuapai showing the volatile atmosphere and wind shear very nicely.
The following frames look extremely suspect for a hook echo going right over Kapiti Island (12.22am):
Also note the very high radar returns - up to 60dBz it looks like! You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: General September Weather
Thunderstorms crossed the Auckland region early morning with frequent lightning. From here, it looked particularly active over the Manukau/Manukau Heads way. I grabbed some photos around 2am. I see the airport picked up 22.8mm.

Re: General September Weather
Nice shots spwill and nice to see you back Willoughby!
Certainly been a very active week for thunderstorms in north island and south islands west coast.
Have been in lake tekapo this weekend and the wind down their has been horrendous!
At this stage GFS is pointing to a risk of thunder/ hail in Canterbury on Tuesday afternoon/ evening.

Re: General September Weather
Yes, watch Tuesday for coastal Otago/Canterbury
I didn't have good luck with the lightning photos this morning, just missed this one. I was getting up early for the All Black game so timing was good.

Re: General September Weather
Wow what a start to spring. Hit 25 degrees in our hood. Happy father's day to all those who look after our next generations.
What was concerning was today's Port Hills walk. It's so dry. What is normally muddy is dusty and hard packed. The green grass is a false economy, it's already browning off in many areas up there.
And I see the Waipara fire is escalating and has spead beyond its containment. It was very evident from the Port hills this afternoon. Many dry and windy days ahead in the next fortnight for much of Canterbury

Walking around my property checking on the animals, very hard to walk with the wind. Will be on alert tonight I think.

Re: General September Weather
Āe mārika!, it's been a warm few days alright. Not as warm as Australia has been but certainly warm for early September standards.
As mentioned last week about the trees reacting, definitely seeing lots of decidious trees budding quickly.
Not surprised to see those wind warnings in force, the main time to watch is between midnight and 7am on Tuesday for most of Canterbury.
Spotting several thunderstorm chances popping up in the long term models not just Tuesday, which is great as we push into Koanga.

It is much stronger than the MS station at Ashburton Airport is reading… I’ll save my thoughts on that for another day.Orion wrote: Sun 01/09/2024 19:13 Just looking in to comment about the wind which has risen and is quite rackety now.

Re: General September Weather
Well, the first day of Spring delivered a warm one here with it getting up to 23.3C. A fine day with light to moderate westerly winds.
Fine evening with not much wind, also some lightning flashing away to the west late evening.

Re: General September Weather
After an evening of sporadic NW wind gusts, it’s been a relatively calm night with a gentle easterly. The NW is now back and is rather strong, gusting around 70kph.

Re: General September Weather
Looks like cold air will bring unstable conditions to the North Island on Wednesday with a thunder and hail risk. The favoured area for thunder looks like southern Waikato/Bay of Plenty in the afternoon. See how it looks on the day.

Re: General September Weather
A really nice example of stationary waves in a stable onshore flow upwind of NW Nelson this morning. Very cool.

Re: General September Weather
Good to see that risk on MS for tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Thinking hail could get 20+mm in some cells, which would meet the severe thunderstorm criteria.
Another warm day currently 20C, a cheeky NE has snuck in albeit briefly as the NW will be back this afternoon.
Some hefty gusts possible overnight especially between 1am and 7am.

Re: General September Weather
Prohibited fire season confirmed, at least for a week. Early but well warranted round here. Dangerous conditions on several levels

Round two has just started! Eailier and more frequent than last night. Down here on a week's holiday.Flutterbye wrote: Mon 02/09/2024 11:58Heaps in Queenstown overnight. First one just after 10pmwembley wrote: Mon 02/09/2024 08:44 Last night it was raining and there was a massive KABOOM! of thunder.
