Had 'on and off' heavy showers last night between 9-11
What a change yesterday out on Banks Peninsula. Until about midafternoon, it was sunny and warm with temps up around 20C. Then cloud built up from the west, soon followed by the (briefly very strong) southerly wind. Rain and hail arrived not long after - and continued, along with sleet, through into the night. Snow settled down to as low as about 250 metres. It's now sunny this morning, but with passing clouds and a fresh to strong southwesterly or southerly. The hills abov Akaroa Harbour have a good coating of snow above about 400 metres.
Well the relatively fine morning on the peninsula changed into an afternoon of passing showers, some with hail; the most intense hailstorm (small hail, but lots of it) being the 1st shower soon after midday. Some strong gusts as well. But I wouldn't be surprised if Chch has stayed fine, as it often does when squally southwesterly showers lash the peninsula.
TV1 reported the icy blast last night as it affected the far south, implying that this is not the sort of weather we should be getting in spring. Well in truth, such cold snaps (bringing low level snowfalls) occur most Septembers and probably at least every 2nd October. Last year, inland Canterbury got a heavy low level dumping near the end of September, and a week later, there was heavy snow to low levels (sea-level in many places) in the same areas affected by this last weekend's blast.
Consequently statements like "the last taste of winter" shouldn't be used by the Media (and MetService) either, especially as we look as if we're entering an El Nino, albeit a mild one, which tend to favour more cold snaps in spring. (remember 1997?)

Yes remember 1997 it was a cold summer ie 26 was the maximum temp and the spring is cold like they always are and the winters seem to start late and finish late now ie in June theres no snow on the mountains but in October and November theyre still skiing

The 72 hour prog nog looks very good for Canterbury. Thunderstorms somewhere if that situation happens!! I look foward to it, although when it gets closer to the time (from past experiance) the prog's seem to look less appealing, lets hope not this time.

Aaron were you get that info? im picking thursday the best day this week
I'm looking at the metservice 72 MSLP hour prognosis, I believe that's this thursday, so like you say thursday looks good. Hopefully it can prolong itself so it happens in the weekend!

WOW I had a look at it Aaron, didnt think it was that good!!! this is our best hope so far this season!
*also tomorrow night a southerly change forecasted, but nor'westers before hand so maybe only abit of lite rain!
