Sleet Showers

Unread post by Andy »

Light sleet is falling here with the snow level around 400m. Any body else getting this? :)

Gary you are probably they only other observer that may be experiencing this. I would say the snow level is lower inland.

Temp 3 degrees
Rainfall 7mm YA :D

Looks like a warm advection snowfall overnight and early this morning in the inland valleys and basins in the South Island high country. Not much of a time gap between the departure of yesterday's cold southerly and the incoming front/trough.

Not surprising - it was certainly forecast by MetService. Cloud has thinned out from the north in Chch with some weak sunshine. Darker still to the south.

I see the Met Service is saying snow to low levels down South early next week . I can't see it in the charts I'm looking at.

Yes, a bit of warm advective snowfall, as predicted by Met Service.

Midday thickness over Invercargill was 5377, not an excessively cold atmosphere but a low level easterly knocked the freezing level down to 500m. We have seen this a number of times this winter.

Hence, never rely on thickness to predict snowfall in inland South Island. :)

If this snow event happens and affects Canterbury to low levels, it would be deja vu. 28th September 2003 brought a major warm advection snowfall to inland Canterbury.

Warm advective snow inland is still possible but to get it toward the Coast you need a feed of very cold air or the very cold air to be in place .
Warm advective snowfall along Coastal parts of Otago and Southland is very rare.
