Sleet Showers
Light sleet is falling here with the snow level around 400m. Any body else getting this?
Gary you are probably they only other observer that may be experiencing this. I would say the snow level is lower inland.
Temp 3 degrees
Rainfall 7mm YA

Looks like a warm advection snowfall overnight and early this morning in the inland valleys and basins in the South Island high country. Not much of a time gap between the departure of yesterday's cold southerly and the incoming front/trough.
Not surprising - it was certainly forecast by MetService. Cloud has thinned out from the north in Chch with some weak sunshine. Darker still to the south.Light sleet is falling here with the snow level around 400m. Any body else getting this?

Yes, a bit of warm advective snowfall, as predicted by Met Service.
Midday thickness over Invercargill was 5377, not an excessively cold atmosphere but a low level easterly knocked the freezing level down to 500m. We have seen this a number of times this winter.
Hence, never rely on thickness to predict snowfall in inland South Island.
