October to begin with brief cold snap

Unread post by tich »

October is about to begin, this time with yet another cold snap. Should be shorter and less intense than Tuesday's freezing weather, but snow showers have been forecast down to 500m by MetService as far north as the Wairarapa/Wellington. Showers are expected to arrive in Chch early afternoon - will there be triggers for thunderstorm activity? I don't know, but hail looks more likely. (but then again it could be another of these changes that give nothing but a bit of cloud and briefly gusty southerlies)

I'm giving tomorrow a 1 out of 5 because of this for the first of my convection outlooks. I think we will have the barometer pressure against us and a lack of easterly :(

John I would think there will be easterlies in the morning if only light, and pressure is already at 1001 hp, that not all that bad this far out is it?
I think it would more depend on the strength of the southely, will it really hit us or be another fizzer!

Sorry, no. That was me not flicking a power switch cleanly so it arced a bit

Just goes to show that you shouldn't trust individual strikes :!:

Light drizzly rain for much of the day so far on Banks Peninsula, nothing remotely thundery or hail producing yet. Light winds, but the southerly(?) came in strong and gusty late last evening, though it clared away the northwest arch high cloud.

Raining in Akaroa area - moderate intensities from about midafternoon, but no hail. Light dusting of snow visible on higher tops above about 700m by late afternoon.
