Auckland Lightning detector

The Boltek finally arrived here this morning! :D

heading out to put up the antenna now before the rain sets in.. hopefully wont get blown off the roof in this NWer!

Should have something online in the next couple of hours 8)

What are the chances of something to start calibrating it the next couple of days? looked like a possibility last time I looked...

Great news, Ricky :D

I'll create some extra custom maps for you this weekend. I've found a 900km has been useful after putting the antenna outside !

Hopefully, you'll see some activity soon.

I've been working on a program which grabs StormVue data files off different websites and combines them onto a map of a bigger area.

Cheers

just installing the main software now.. I have the antenna about 2m off the ridge of the roof, about 12m above ground total and fairly in the clear... I never received a login to update the nexstorm software after I registered so hopefully what I have is OK for now, let me know what you need for the wider area map :) no problem putting any amount of data up as often as needed here...

Monday looks a highly likely day for some electrical activity over the region. A lower chance later tomorrow. :)

Kind of addictive watching the strikes about 500km out to the west! Lets hope we get some action today.

I'm now combining Ricky's StormVue data with my own and uploading this every five minutes.

You can see the result at http://www.templeton.gen.nz/weather/NZStormVue.html

The map covers 1000km from the centre - ignore the range circles ! Nexstorm truncates the data for StormVue at about 600km which is shown by the shaded area.

It's easy to include other stormtrackers e.g. Dunedin ;)

Awsome job people!!

Steven G. Does the data for the NZ map double up, yours detects a strike and then rick's does and they both plot it? Or when both detectors detect a strike does it only plot once making it more accurate? Or do they have the own individual regions and won't detect each othes strikes? Thanks!

If they detect the same strike then they will double up. I'm not attempting to triangulate the results ... yet ;)

If you look at my static map with a range of 900km, it's detecting strikes out to 750+ km from the storm to the west of the NI, but the data fed to StormVue doesn't include those (I assume it's to keep file sizes smaller).

It might be possible to have that changed in a future version Nexstorm.

Awesome work Ricky and Steven. :D

The storm out to the west of the North Island is starting to look interesting for tonight.

I've been thinking about making a map showing a few trackers on the East coast of Australia plus the ones in NZ :) It could include this one near Cairns which Deano will find useful (or might know of already) http://www.gorgecreekorchards.com.au/StormVue.html

After that ..... the World

Thats a really nice set up Steven - well done! Looks good at 1000km range as well as close up from each one.

Yes, thanks Steven and Ricky for setting up this lightning detection network and making it available. From what I have observed, it's performs well when compared to the Met Service site. Infact, it outperforms the Met Service set up. Just fantastic. :)
