I've often used...

satellite imagery
and now the GMS-5 satellite is off their site replaced with GOES-9
a little research suggests that satellite (GOES-9) was decommissioned?
parked in orbit as a backup,
have they now started to use it to cover GMS-5 missing coverage?
curious thanks

Hi Pete,
GMS-5's replacement, MTSAT-1, suffered "launch failure" in 1999 and MTSAT-1R isn't due to be launched until at least Feb 2004 (it was supposed to be this year).
JMA came to an agreement with NOAA to use the mothballed GOES-9 as a backup and it took over from GMS-5 on 22nd May.
There's more info at http://www.jma.go.jp/JMA_HP/jma/indexe.html
Cheers,
Steven
