Low cloud has come over here again in Chch, bugger! It's still warmish and humid but not warm enough. However, the low cloud seems to cease on the outskirts of Chch though and as Ricky noted in the other thread, a lightning strike has occured just NW of Chch somewhere in the foothills area. When looking from my place you can see there is some good Cu action out on the plains which started around 11am this morning, I can't tell whether there's Cb or not becasue of the low cloud. No chasing today though, maybe tomorrow? But the upper air is meant to stabilise more so maybe not. Monday or Tuesday could be interesting.

Yes, some good lightning around southern NI areas! Oh to hear thunder again!

A very intense shower over Feilding (15min N), however the same shower cloud is taking its time to get here and is starting to weaken. :(

Looks like there are Convective Biuld ups this afternoon from about Waikato to Wairarapa. It will peak over the next two hours.

Overcast in Auckland with that Front just to our North but it will have moved on by the morning and I think we will see convective Thunderstorms around Auckland tomorrow before the next Front moves in later.

Another strike has occured in the foothills. Today with the temp over Chch is just not enough. We would need to get to atleast 24 and even then we would only probably get big Cu. The plains however is above that inversion so if the temp there has got to 24 today which is likely it would be unstable to around 9000m. Chch, if we got to 24 we could conditionally be unstable to 8300m. At the moment it's stable as anything although there is a bit of mid layer instability but that doesn't count for anything. :( :)

A bit of a fizzer as far as Thunderstorms go here. It looked like the Wairarapa/Hawkes Bay, were the places to be.

Dewpoints should be up a bit tomorrow, perhaps around the 18C mark, which may well induce some decent instability. Also the wind shear envirnment should improve tomorrow, little or no shear over the NI today. Have to wait and see though how tomorrow shapes up. That front looks almost stationary over Northland at the moment.

Definitely Cbs I could see to the northwest about 4PM. You'd think it would've been warmer inland in these northeasterly conditions, but Ashburton only got to 14C today, while Chch (more exposed to this wind) reached the early 20s for a time.

Good to here Ben, thought there might be something out there. It has cleared a bit this afternoon so I quickly took some pics of Cu I could see. You can see in the pics how much low cloud there is.

I noticed that too.
I think that Ashburton would of been more into the 20s, possibly 24??? :-k

I noticed that TVOne had transmission problems around 6pm.
Did anyone else notice?

I noticed - disruption continued intermittantly, but was over by the time of the weather.

Yeah, I noticed TV one cutting out at times to. At least it wasn't the TV.

You guys can probably see better to the W / NW being that ever bit more inland than me but here I couldn't see much unfortunately.

Had a couple of short heavy showers already, the temperature at 12:50pm is sitting on 26.5 so there is a fair bit of heating going on.

Starting to see some activity to the north-west out to sea on the lightning detector... fingers crossed for a good afternoon / night!

Cheers,

Thunder heard 1500hrs NW auckland

Unread post by Shepherds Valley WX »

Hi guys, we have some big convective buildups crossing the farm now with a good rain event as well (4.0mm in less than 10mins) Murmurs of thunder can be heard also. Current temp is 20.5C and dropping with a DP of 16.5C. Baro dropping at -0.7MB p/hr. The CBs are heading towards Auckland from my position.... :)

(actually hoped they stay around a bit longer so I could get some more of the wet stuff... )

I fancy the potential for South Island thunderstorms tomorrow Monday - especially in Otago, Canterbury and possibly Marlborough as the low passes over in the early afternoon. The timing could be right for a lot of parameters. :-)

It looks as if the front is weakening somewhat as it heads over the North Island :?

There looks to be a thunderstorm going off right now east of Omarama, I thought somewhere might get something today if the temp got high enough.

Yes Tony, hopefully things pull off tomorrow!!

Had just a couple of hours of sunshine here today, not enough for thundery convection but heavy showers did develop out to our west. I see Brian got 6mm at his place .

That Front moving in this Evening looks weaker, see what happens.

We have some distant thunder now (looking at the lightning map it must be very distant!) The sky is pretty dark to the west and north west. Got 14mm today so at least the cracks in the gerden will fill in ;)
