I see Brian got 6mm at his place
i was not home, LOL, been in taupo (wifes sisters 40th)

but the rain radar did show real heavy rain that came off the waitkeres
i notice our wind went around to the west temporaritly after it

the cb' s out there now are moving down in lines....one good one just went down the coastline...
but more good cb lines should move the whole auckland area during the evening
should be a good test for ricky's lightning detector, which has already picked up strikes out to the west of us

my fingers are crossed in anticipation of some sort of lightning event to photograph!!! and monitor on Ricky's boltek!! :)

Hey Graham, you are just down the way from me, my WX has not been operating for long enough to have good accurate historical data, but how DRY has it been down your way??? We have cracks in the paddocks you can fit an axe handle down and browning off pastures already...we got 12.6mm today, but mate, I hope theres more on the way...

(yes Michael, I know where lucky its not Australia... ;) )

Looks like a cb over east Otago early this evening. I'm not suprised there have been Isolated late day cb's in the South as the Invercargill upper sounding was conditionally unstable last night/today.

The front moving onto the North island this evening looks like it may be a fizer.

TV1 Weather mentioned afternoon thunderstorms in inland South Canterbury today. Unstable looking high cloud visible from Banks Peninsula from this afternoon, but obviously still well to the west. But the northeasterly has become strong and gusty at times out here.

Gidday again, have been out in thrain attempting to get some pics of the lightning...looked to be sheet lightning ( I am no expert) between clouds...seemed to go right over the farm as the thunder was massive!!! Storm is now heading away towards Auckland City...anyone down there reading this I'd be interested to hear what you guys see!! I am still picking up local sferic on my amateur radio... I notice Ricky's detector has shown nothing for the Helensville area??? I can vouch for the fact that there was a heap of lightning here...Graham in waimauku may also have seen this if not heard it?? :)

Something else interesting...as the T/S went over we had a barometric spike upwards 1.5mb in a very short time as shown on my WX PC Weather Display....... now descending again with light rain falling...

Thats was a buzz...just to short!!!

Agree, massive storm with lightning every 30 seconds or so. Large winds too. Have been watching until now and it seems to have slowed down somewhat. Awesome display of C-C lightning.

We've been hammered for the past 20 minutes - just gone 10pm. No good lightning shots from it though, too much cloud clutter!

Hopefully we will get more 8)

I'll reply on the rain data tomorrow...

Cheers,

G

Michael what freq are you picking up lightning sferic's on if any? Ia m getting regular sferics on 9700Mhz ... from a peak of one every 3-5 sec to one ever 30 now....

My baro is now rising 998.3, external temp plummeted 5 degrees during the TS as did dew point..awesome to be able to ID the TS event on the graph and be able to see all the corelations between the data....

As the TS went thru also had a wind shift to the West (from Northerly) and is now swinging back to Nort/Nor East...

i got it on film !
(using the video part of my web cam)
after it had passed overhead
download the .avi file here:
http://www.weather-display.com/lightning.AVI
(you need to wait a while though, 32 seconds it happens at)

i too had a baro increase from 996.4 to 998.5 in one jump!

theyre audible on the MW Band above 1400kHz I remember I used to tune the radio in about 2NA many years ago(around 1420kHz) it always picked up sferics also there was little there apart from 3ZM,Tokoroa,Hauraki and Taupo,Blenhiem and Hawera at that time ;)

C-Nimbus...yeah I think you may be correct, ( Iassume you are using SKY TV Weather channel for latest radar? METService still shows 7pm!)

I am recording increased sferic activity and also can see flashes towards the east (Kaukapakapa) as i type ... rain has now ceased but wind is now Northerly 315degrees a 5kmh....

WD shows at the peak of the storm (936pm)we had 3.3mm rain per minute....

Absolutely fascinating!! :) :) :)
