Hye Brian, I just viewed your footage...I paused it on the 32sec mark at the time of the strike...mate that is awesome!!! The lightning was more inter cloud up here, but thats a truly aweome piece of work by your webcam and you!! :)

I also experienced a massive baro jump almost instantaneously....why is that???? :?:

Yes, plenty of lightning but much of the thunder distant here. The storm looks to have gone around me here. About 15mins of heavy rain.

i was real lucky ....there was lots of forks like that just out over the harbour east of us.....the rain had stopped here, at the time (8mm in a short period)....and I am thinking, man, i could get these on the web cam.....and so i set it rolling, standing outside.....and then kaboom, the best one of the whole evening as far as a fork went....!
i had some closer, but the rain blocked the view (i.e 6 seconds to the thunder)

barometer...i suppose you can think of it as a pressure release....i have seen active cb lines before that do that with the barometer...its like a big correction step took place....its like there was an earthquake to release the pressure difference form one side to the other....

Good reports you guys (It must be risky having your computers going tho')
...yes bloody Auckland getting the crop of thunderstorms again

Hope we do well tomorrow.
I don't know about the South Canterbury thunderstorms as reported on TV1 by that irrititating TV woman, tho'???
Steven Graham's Boltex showed TS more to the south and around Fioldland way :-k
I didn't look thundery tho'
No mention of the EnE Gales here in ChCh today either on TV.
I think they were the strongest Ne we've had in ChCh for a while.

Looking at Metservice radar and also looking outside I am guessing that could be it for tonite. The stars are out up here and the wind has swung back to the NNW 338deg... looks to be a clearance behind the storm. baro now steady at 998.3Mb... what a couple of hours tho!!

Good luck to the mainlanders for there "turn' tommorow night.... :)

Has anyone else been checking ricky's Auckland Lightning Detector? It shows a heap of strikes in the area right now....is anyone else seeing it like that? I am waiting outdoors to see, as it looks like any strikes would be in my area!! Or is there an accuracy ior calibration ssue with the Boltek? :?:

I gave up trying to work out what it was doing.. just went mental! lol and things were getting way too interesting outside to be looking at the computer.. then all of a sudden it started giving sensible readings again.

Downdrafts - big vertical currents pushing air downwards around the perimeter of the CB increases the air pressure - literally, more air is being heaped on top of you, so the pressure rises. If the very centre of the storm passed over you you would probably see a correspnding drop in pressure (so long as the storm was still being fed from underneath - as it reaches maturity it starts to feed in air from higher levels). Remember, there is a lot happening in 3 dimensions inside a storm.

Fair to say it was a pretty exciting time outside Ricky... what do you think its picking up now? I thought that perhaps there were so many strikes that it possibly had a delay in processing all the data...the graphic showing now looks to be suitable for the height of the TS event an hour ago.... :)

Don't worry about that Foggy,
I have had trouble with my video camera in the past.
Just go out there and enjoy the show :) :) :)
