Not surprising looking at the dark cloud in that direction this afternoon. Add that to the thunderstorm late yesterday, even though that was to the west of Akaroa Harbour (where I was), not in the township. Looks like it could be over - blue skies almost all around now. 7PM radar shows shower activity south of Timaru, but will that be heading our way. Probably not, but who knows.Akaroa reported 5 thunderstorms today, lucky people
SI Thunderstorms!! From 15/11/04 till ?

Got a txt from my niece in Oamaru around 8.30pm. She at a school hostel and said that that the skies were erupting. Massive thunder overhead with forked lightning. Glad to see she thought of me.
We had some great cb's, a couple of claps, 30 secs of 8mm hail

Good to hear Phil. Definately not as much strikes as yesterday but some none the less. The storms seamed to get up to B'sP and then move east.
Bob Crowder tolled me he saw torrential falls of rain yesterday when driving around little river coming back from Akaroa. He also saw lots of lightning.
Roll on next thunderstorm!

I've created an animated GIF of the 13000 "strikes" detected on Monday afternoon between 14:10 and 18:00.
It's about 180kB and you can download it here: http://www.templeton.gen.nz/images/041115storm.gif

Looks great, I would say the westward movement of the Lightning in the animation is due to the storm developing out westward into the very good inland heat source. Normally upper West-NW winds would have moved the storm out to Sea more quickly but obviously the upper winds that day were very light .
Must have been a great Storm to watch.
