3 photos I took from Hillmorton looking South East at about 7:15pm. This was just as the wind shifted from NE to south and about 10 mins before it started raining.

Awsome stuff guys!! :o

A few videos that will be interesting to watch! Steven G's and Stephen B's! Looking foward to it.

I'm sort of annoyed that I had my camera taking photo's in more of a letterbox format which I didn't relise, I prefer the wider type photo's. Doesn't really matter, I can just crop them.

That last photo of mine above is just to show what the sky was like when I saw lightning going off.

Thanks Steven G. I've got 3 reports to put up now! Just haven't had time to get around to the other two yet. I also saved all the weatherzone sat pics for today (10am till 11pm) so that will be an interesting animation to watch.

Jason, I love that 2nd pic, great roll cloud indeed! I also got your video and have taken a few stills from it of your lightning. I've tried for lightning with my digital camera before (in the movie mode) but it just hasn't really worked. I could've tried today but didn't bother, just sat back and watched the show which was nice. I would've if the lightning was a bit more frequent.

Here's your stills!

Edited: 12:33pm

Just had some small hail, 3mm or there abouts. Good to here a report of some bigger hail Tony.

I had to face the rain which started soon after 7.30PM - fortunately there's plenty of shelter in central Chch. Didn't notice any thunder, lightning or hail, as I was inside from about 7.45, and the place had no windows. By the time I left, soon after midnight, it was still cloudy and cold, but no rain was falling.

Great bunch of pictures! It's nice to see those structures from a couple of different angles and distances. Here's to a photogenic summer! ;)

Now i don't mean to sound like i am promoting a conspiracy theory but has anyone else noticed that when anything exciting happens in Canterbury, the MetService radar goes out of action ... ? last image available being from 4pm thursday? :?:

It must happen all over the world. There are similar complaints from the uk weather newsgroup about radar info there when something interesting is happening. The last update on Saturn cable was 5pm then the radar sequence was omitted indicating it wasn't updating. I see its still broken... :(

got a wee story to add!

We had a lightning strike hit a power pole or something down our street, this was when i was away chasing!

Because the thunder happend almost straight away, our house and the neighbours house both shaked because of it!! Dad then went out to the strret and said he could smell that electrical burning smell!!!

IL have my photos up later today!

Yeah, the metservice radar did go out didn't it!

I've saved the 1 and 4pm radar's but can't do the 7pm radar. They want to keep special radar images all to themselves!! Sometimes when things have gone out I'll notice it pops up later but it hasn't this time...

And, good stuff Ange!! I saw that cloud band on the models and saw it was going to move over us but wasn't sure until how long it was gone the southerly would arrive and if enough time would be available for heating. Mainly I looked at satellite pic's and gave advice as it's whats actually happening. Looks like it did clear in time to give a bit of sun before the front arrived which was good!

It was NE right unil the Southerly came through. The last part of the NE was interesting. Instead of it feeling like the NE was blowing by itself it was more like it was being sucked up into the cloud which is what happens I guess. The gust front showing exiting southerly cold air as was said on the other thread only a few days ago and the NE was being sucked into the cloud creating that awsome roll cloud.

Good stuff Steve. Looking foward to your video..

Reports to follow I hope!! Just got to get onto the dam things.

wintery

Its rather wintry out there today southerly quite strong up around 60kmh here on my windometere. No rain apart from the odd spit before as we were under a small RFB the winds too strong or else there would be some good heavy showers I would imagine  .
yeah found out where lightning bolt hit about a minute down the road from my house a big pine tree people from the northern motorway would have had a good view of it probly crapping thier pants as it was quite a huge bolt. .
I cant get to the pine tree its in someones back property of about 100 acres but you can see the singed black pine tree which is split down the middle.
Shortly after the bolt the fire brigade siren went off so the warning signal took awhile to come through here in Kaiapoi although the Pines beach siren went off just before the storm.
Yes I noticed the radar is still yesterdays at 4pm correct me if iam wrong but ( could it get intercepted by the lightning) I know it shouldnt because it should be able to stand up to lightning but last Mondays thunderstorm was the same and with the New Brighton pier cam not properly working the next day.
I was amazed our power never got affected but yet when I hit my deck to get down low because of the lightning my leg that was in the air got some static electricity run up like a wave of pins and needles.
SO WHATS THE CHANCES ON A SCALE 5 THAT WE WILL GET STORMS THIS WEKND?.
Iam thinking Saturday and maybe Monday at this stage.
By the way my home page Xtra.co.nz has a logo for thunderstorms in Dunedin but when you read the weather for otago its just showers lol  .
Cheers
JASON TIPPET.

Lightning strikes out accounting service

The accounting service MYOB has been knocked out of service by a lightning strike in Christchurch last night.

MYOB has put out a release saying lightning rendered part of Telstra's phone network in the Christchurch suburb of Russley inoperative, at the same time it knocked out MYOB services nationwide.

MYOB says Telstra is working on replacing the destroyed equipment, but until further notice they cannot be contacted by phone.

I knew it was cold and wet, but snow on the Port Hills? :o How much, to what levels? Was it Mt Herbert that you were looking at? Snow on the Port Hills in late November sounds pretty unusual. Perhaps that's why I didn't go out of my way to look at them - I just didn't imagine they'd get a dusting.

We've been getting regular but brief and light hail showers through the afternoon. The clouds are quite small and low, but the lower atmosphere is obviously very cold. Snow was down to about 400m on Mt Grey this morning, so I'm not surprised to hear of a little on the top of the Port Hills. Although cold outbreaks in November are usual most years, this one does seem to be rather colder than most.

We do seem to have had a lot of very cold outbreaks this year, from the one in mid April through to now.

Someone I know in Queenstown said they had a good covering of snow around thier place this morning but they live above the town level.

Lots of Cb showers here today and some stronger Cb's SE of here with the afternoon heating. They show up on the Lightning detector.

Travelling from Chch to Akaroa this afternoon, it was only partly cloudy, but the cloud increased as I got further on. Brief spits out around Akaroa, including some minute hail. Dusting of snow still visible on top of Mt Herbert, but bus driver said that snow and hail was falling at Hilltop in morning. Central North Island has snow forecast as low as 700m today, but surprisingly MetService hasn't put out any road snow warnings - perhaps they weren't expecting snow to sttle to such low levels in late November.

After a while I've finished the report for yesterday:

http://nzts.escootersnz.com

Now to do the others! I was more excited about this most recent storm so did that first, will do the others shortly. Now waiting for Steve's report and pics so I can put them up. Some of his pics will be quite awsome I believe from the small bit of video I saw on his camcorder on its small LCD.
