i was off farm today, but I thought you may be interested in veiwing my Weather Display Screenshot for the day which clearly shows the storm and associated rain event....

i thought the upload problem was just that it disconnects after the last file is uploaded, prematurely...but that they do upload?
maybe email me your settings (go aciton, back up registry entry now, and email me the files wdisplayftp.reg from the folder databackup)
looking at the rain radar, the squall line developed over the waipoa forest
just some follow up:
I was watching clouds hanging low over the waitakeres , heading towards the beach here (big bay), and real heavy rain associated with it...we had a visitor at the time., and I said, that almost looks like a tornado forming (the waitekeres (this was puponga point) is good at that.,...
and then that visitor promptly left
just had phone call from someone down in big bay (and i also could see lots of lightning strikes there too)
and they said they could see a huge wall of white rain coming, then really strong winds!
(we did not get the wind here, but boy the clouds were moving fast above us!

We had a white wall of rain here as well - in the pic above normally you can see Woodhill in the background.

Yesterday afternoon's storm approached central Auckland with quite a nice gust front, wish I had had my camera with me. The deluge was welcome for the garden, the ground just starting to dry out. November has been a dry month.

with relation to a gust front NZstorm, what is your understanding of what they are and what are the conditions needed for them to form? Are they particular to a type of thunderstorm?. Any help would be appreciated.
The trough approaching from the west isn't too far away, hopefully some afternoon heating will happen before it arrives. There are some lumps showing about 50km out to sea on the 1pm radar. Also a good convection warning for tomorrow afternoon for nearly the whole of the north island
bascily there was a heck alot of updrafts , and what goes up must come down.....and where it comes down you get big squalls/downbursts, etc
the interesting thing was that front was a real slider.....NE wind in front, N wind behind, upper NW flow.....i.e the embeded cb's were moving along the front (NNW to SSE)
could be more interesting weather coming by the looks.....the jet stream is doing a big dive down then up and then down again over us, going around the big slow moving high south of australia.....and there is a new low moving out of the southern ocean now
I guess it's not in the budget or something for NZ? So they don't provid it freely to the public unless you pay for it via metnet for e.g. It wouldn't really be that much more of an effort to do 10 minute updates would it? The system is allready in place, am I overlooking something??

Yes ,a gust Front is caused by descending air out of Cb. I didn't see much of a Gust Front here yesterday but I heard there was a good looking one over the City+lower Northshore area.
Dew points in Auckland today are around 10C, low for the time of the year and not great for Thunderstorms. I see there are a few Lightning strikes well out to Sea. Air will be more unstable tomorrow.
So.......does anyone think there's a chance of it being avaiable in future to the public?
I guess not if they're earning money for it now, why would they want to get stop that.
Yes, gust front is the outflow from an organised cb or a colapsing cb.
As Brian has suggested, what must go up must eventually come down.
I wouldn't expect much more than widely scattered showers today. Dewpoints are a bit low to allow deeper convection today. Tomorrow should be different as the upper air will be colder and more likely to destabilise with surface heating. So a few thunderstorms likely tomorrow more particularly in places were the temps can get up a bit such as inland Waikato.
Hopefully something will work out tomorrow - planning a trip through Katikati - Tauranga and back up through the Waikato tomorrow it's great being on holiday!
So your the other that knows 'HLD', It's all coming together now. lol.
Metservice has most of the North Island with a moderate risk of storms tomorrow, hopefully you get something guy's.
Ummm, what's moderate risk come to think of it? 40%, 60%? I'm guessing if there's Low risk, Moderate risk and High Risk you'd have to divide it into thirds? So that would be 66.6(alot more 6's then a 7, lol)% ??
