The AA Road Report mentioned snow and ice affecting 3 Otago highways, including Dunedin's northern motorway, which I believe is a little below the 400m MetService predicted snow for. Strong cold southerly here in Chch this morning; dry here, but shower cloud visible to southeast.

I believe if the snow has fallen that low in Dunedin that will be 250m on northern motorway which is close to sea level wow

Had a burst of heavy showers at 9pm this evening nothing since strange

.
Looking fine at first tomorrow with light winds then showers spread off Peninsula there's even a low chance of storms happening but hey there was a low chance yesterday and look what happend.
Provided the wind stays down during the morning and the dew point temp goes well plus good temperature we will need something like 16dg they are forecasting for 15dg so yeah be intersting to see what happens.

I don't know about storms Jason over the next few days but it maybe a bit better next week. Will let you know as the series of events draws closer

A good dusting of snow yesterday morning to 300m inland here.

Bitterly cold here for almost December. Winters last sting.

There is a good chance of air frosts tonight.. Not good

Bring back the 30 + degree days.....

Looking at my stats, yesterday was the second windiest day I've recorded this year with an average speed of 15.2km/h with a top gust of 52 km/h and a wind run of 372km.

The record for this year so far is the 15th Feb. An unseasonal southerly wind averaging 16.5km/h gusting to 49m/h and a wind run of 403km. The max temperature was 15.6 and there was 12.4mm of rain.

Speaking of southwesterly gales (real gales), I was with family at the summit road over 600m above Akaroa late this morning. It was only 7C on the car thermometer, but the windchill from the southwesterly gales must've been 0C or lower. Luckily it was dry with variable cloud, though I was told by people living nearby that they'd had a hail shower earlier in the morning, and that during the morning before, snow had settled as low as about 550m. Brrr..

we did have gale force at times on friday....
with gusts to 48 knots at the farm

and hail, with temperature of only 9.5oc in the hail showers
max was 14oc that day!

Australia is the only reason we get some half decent weather at all. If it were not there it would be polar permanently.

The real positive thing about the bad weather is that it gives tourists a bad impression of the country so hopefully one day us citizens can have it back.

Australia's impact on NZ's weather is quite minimal I think although one could have an interesting debate on it. Sometimes those real deep strong NW'esters bring in a little more heat and humidity than they otherwise would. And I think the Tasman Sea is a breeding ground for unsettled weather due to the fact that cold weather is constantly feeding in from the Aussie Bight and milder moist air coming in from the north.

those 2 points are very valid, and also the fact the jetstream and SPCZ tend to bow around Oz too...
i think its a significant effect, and makes our weather more stormy

I agree. Too many damn tourists anyway! If this summer stays poor, maybe there'll be a downturn.
