Thanks heaps Jeff!

You can see the rain activity associated with what I'm guessing is a SW? Also some strikes on the tracker in that area. Hopefully it pushes up this way?

Looks to me like its going to move offshore in a WSW and not get into Canty.

Most often when we have a front come through and the flow is expected to turn strongish westerly the next day, then the SW never really gest established over Canterbury, and showers dont make it up from Otago. Much more likely to happen if the flow is forecast to stay SW the next day. looking back, thats probably the reason for the unease I felt yesterday about forecasting storms for Canty for today.

However, I may yet be wrong... :)

Clouded over early afternoon around Akaroa; low cloud and some drizzle at times for most of afternoon...BUT as I write, proper rain is starting to fall, and I can hear frequent THUNDER. :)

Rain now quite heavy with thunder and lightning. Not what you'd expect after an afternoon of low cloud and drizzle. :o

Now we've got heavy (lentil sized) hail falling as well! (just starting to ease) The lightning seems to be sheet lightning as far as I can tell.

Starting to clear now. Still some hail lying around, but it must've been heavier over the other, Akaroa side of the harbour (Takamatua), where there's a snow like dusting on the hills.

Great light show but too far away to hear anything and mostly obscured by low cloud. S'ly change came gusting through at 10:50.

A couple of 20s images I took which don't show all that much - I had the aperture stopped down too far on earlier attempts which would have been better #-o

Yeah wow what a show out there iam positive i got some good lightning on video camera so iam just going to check digital camera now here's hoping. :D
Some of those flashes and bolts were blinding  had a few good distant thunder rumbles but nothing much really apart from some sporadic drops of rain at 10pm.
Here's hoping for some storms towards the end of this week its someone else's turn to set up a post this time and for friday/Saturday coming.
Cheers

Steve and me are back from an awsome chase with lots of lightning and some ok pics! I managed to get some Cg's plus a few other photographs of lightning, they aren't the best but ok for my first proper go at getting the stuff. I'm pretty chuffed! :D

It started to rain and hail at one point so had to get back in the car while lightning kaboomed overhead. Here's one for tonight, got to get to bed!

Great stuff Steven G! One thing that would've been good about your postition compared to ours tonight is that compostion wise you were in a better spot with trees and the plains etc to make the shot more interesting. Where we were it was mostly sea. Great stuff anyway. 8)

Yes Jason, maybe this Friday and Weekend coming up! Man, what a period of storms!

Yeah great stuff Aaron I reackon thats better than my first lightning shot the other day :D .
I stayed up till midnight last night outside watching the storms move towards Kaikoura it was probly the first spectacualr storm I have seen at night so farr over the past five years although we did get a storm from the west about 3 years ago at 1am with god lightning and thunder but I wasn't as game to be out in it as iam now 8) .
Whats the deal outside? the high cloud is burning off and the sun shinning with some nice clouds building up around us quite strange really :) .
There's still lightning so many miles out from the Peninsula or has that started agian this morning?.
I was video 'ing on my 30 sec digital camera but the night vision is crap atleast I know what works and what doesnt but I am getting a video camera very soon.
Cheers
