Xmas day weather

Unread post by spwill »

The weather on Xmas day should be okay across NZ.
No sleet and snow on the way at this stage. :o
Looks like stable westerly quarter winds and it might be warm in the East.

Yes settled conditions for the North Island, with light southwesterly breezes for Auckland northwards, light westerlies elsewhere, warmer and sunnier out east.

Mostly fine for Canterbury northwards with light west to northwest winds.
Some rain or showers developing or persisting for Southland, Otago, Westland ;)

Anyone else?

Yes, a mainly fine day for Xmas day with moderate temps, warmer on Boxing day but with rain into the west and south of the South Island.
I am spending Xmas in Timaru, It would be nice to see a Canterbury northwester while I'm down there.

Yes both the main models, GFS and ECMWF are showing quite different forecasts

No snow here for Xmas but have a look at the ECMWF charts for the UK.

Melbourne looks like getting cold wet weather for a few days from late Boxing day. Will that cold weather arrive here in time for NewYears Eve.

Yeah I agree but here in Canterbury between xmas and new year we have had Thunderstorms over the last 4-5 years and one day in 2002 had it dropping to 9dg here as we had a hailstorm.
But it's still got to be relativly warm air for TS so yeah I guess without TS it's pretty settled yeah. :D
Although our TS may occur before Xmas this year not after maybe after too I dont know but yeah looks like TS here tomora afternoon and on Wednesday.
cheers
JASON TIPPET.

I dont see Xmas day weather being too bad as we will have a Ridge moving on to NZ so any showers should be subdued.

It's early days but the ingredients for a cold out break at NewYear look to be there.
