There's just been a very large M 7.8 quake in the Kermadec Islands region.

Doesn't seem to be any tsunami alerts/warnings yet

I was just looking at the volcano drum from the other link, and it had picked up that quake...

Just heard on the radio that a warning was issued, but cant confirm where they got this. Cant see it mentioned anywere

LOCATION - KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION
MAGNITUDE - 7.8

EVALUATION

IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES IN THE REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES
TO HOURS. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE
ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL MONITOR
SEA LEVEL GAUGES NEAREST THE REGION AND REPORT IF ANY TSUNAMI
WAVE ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED. THE WARNING WILL NOT EXPAND TO OTHER
AREAS OF THE PACIFIC UNLESS ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED TO
WARRANT SUCH AN EXPANSION.

dam im super busy today so dont really have time to follow this.

I was doing the same as you brian.. i was looking at the okatina drum or whatever one is in that other topic and saw a very recent biggy!

Latest warning says
SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS
TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTLINES OF THE REGION

its now classified as a marine threat only
so similar to what we have had already from the recent Japan and Chile quakes

sure has been a busy couple of years for these things

The gauge at north cape sure is dropping big time....looking bigger than we have had recently?
ok, bottomed out at 0.8m maybe drop in sea level?

nothing recorded at east cape....so far...which was probably the tell tell for it all being cancelled (still though to take note of unusual currents/tides (heck the manukau has 0.5 m higher yesterday due to storm surge conditions)

I see Gt barrier island is getting some small changes in sea level

I suspect that North cape is also being affected by the storm conditons on the west coast

Quite a not active event really, although I wonder how long it takes with events like this before people stop following warnings and a "bigger" tsunami hits.

I'm sure we'll see a big tsunami from the pacific hit NZ in the next 50 years and that some 'smart' people will be at the beach collecting driftwood or taking pictures.

Computed propagation of the July, 2011 Kermadec tsunami.

Also, Maximum Amplitudes Plot from NOAA Tsunami Research Centre. Note that orientation of the quake’s fault rupture was north-south, so most of the tsunami's energy was radiated west-east.
