Great photos! Certainly looks like it may have touched down. The event was N of Kaitaia and just to the SW of Rangaunu Harbour. An isolated cell crossed over that area around 6pm yesterday.

Had a really close look at the photo, distorted the colours, enhanced etc - does look like it definitely touched down in my view. Certainly been the year for twisters - and with spring almost here I guess we can expect more!

Yes, good to see these things being photographed. Having a look back at the met data there doesn't look to have been the shear over Northland Thursday pm for a tornado. 0-1km shear looks about 5knots so just a weak spout.

According to these eye-witness reports, the funnel cloud formed around 4pm, but it didn't actually touch down...
