Looks like the next major impulse in the w flow crosses the North Island Thursday pm. Can Auckland get thunderstorm out of it? I think Taranaki definitely will but not sure about Auckland. Have to see how the next few gfs runs shape up. Would be nice to get a hail storm like Wellington got!

^ Interesting. Amazing damage pics!
Probably not quite the right thread, but a nice photo of a funnel-cloud taken last Wednesday in Matakohe in the N Kiapara area has also just been published...

Nice photo, a fair weather funnel cloud. I recall we had sea breeze convergence across Auckland /Northland last Wednesday but cloud tops were shallow under a ridge.Nev wrote:^

A very atypical tornado, there must have been some mesoscale wind effects going on in the valley where it occurred!
Looks F1.

The reported hail would most likely have been from the small intense red spot on the left hand side of this cell (centre of image), with said 'tornado' following right behind...

Re: Tasman Low / Active Front(s) - Sep 11-15
The Gisborne tornado looks like a case of some local NW flow feeding into a storm which formed on the cold front. The upper flow was SW so the undercutting NW flow would have generated the helicty. Also other factors such as the SE change providing the convergence along the front and an upper level SW jet stream enhancing lift over the area assisted the cb development. One of the more unusual tornadoes scenarios you will see. Seems to be a winter for tornadoes.

I was in Stratford and left just after 2pm. I followed the front all the way from there to Hamilton. Saw lightning, heard thunder, saw flash flooding, torrential rain.
Fantastic couple of hours. cant believe how well it worked out for me.
