For all things relating to tectonic plate collisions. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis... the Pacific ring of fire and world-wide. Please create new threads for stronger earthquakes when they happen above magnitude 5.0.

wow - check you out... you were right lol
Yes. I thought so, even though it wasn't a strong as previous "4 Scenario" earthquakes as I call them.
I see that it has been upgraded to a 4.8M at a shallower depth.
Anyway, the strongest one for a while, well for about 10 days. It's been over a month for a 5 pointer, but we will have to wait until a "4 Scenario" evolves for the next earthquake event for that to eventutate, and I'm not saying when, or if it will happen.
Woken up by the 4.9 this morning, though it was finished by the time I was awake - turned on talkback radio to make it wasn't a dream. Went back to sleep and had a dream/nightmare that my place had lots of stuff damaged by that quake. Woke up again and realised no objects had been moved at all.
Dont you hate that Ben, its worse when your dreaming of an earthquake and wake up to one almost your bodies way of telling you to wake up.
Sure was a good strong lurch to the house here went on for a good 10 or so seconds felt alot stronger than 4.9 to me and looked alot stronger on the drums too , it was revised up to 5.0 on quake live this morning now back down to 4.9 again.
Yes. Situated 2.6kms from here, not far from the rumble around 2:57pm.
Another but a strong one in the swarm of quakes around the Weedons area
This was the sharpest quake I have felt here since June 13th. All indicators fell over. Cats scattered.
I was on the phone to my brother in Halswell and he felt the initial jolt a second after I said "woah" when I felt it here. Strongest here since the June 21st 5.4 near Prebbleton.
It was an up and down shunt here then just slight rolling afterwards, made me jump as there was no rumble with which is odd from the Greendale.
I thought it was the port hills or Port Levy way as they always creep up on you without warning.
Defintely a jolt here, like the 'afterjolts' from the Sept 4th quake.
Now our hot water cyclinder has sprung a leak from one of it's joints after this jolt.
I thought it was a Lyttelton Harbour one, as I was in Halswell at the time, as when I arrived at home the indicators were still in place and my wife didn't say anything when I arrived home from work.
Maybe the next, substantal one will be out this way JohnGaul

A couple of felt earthquakes, M4, occured today to celebrate today's date of the 19th, which is the average of the "4"'s dates for the substantial Canterbury Earthquakes since Sept the 4th 2010.
The Prebbleton one, today, was felt here with a soft wobble on the windows.
Mind you, the quakes are dying away with not much felt with only 2 or so a day, being recorded.
4.2 around 45mins ago followed by a smaller jolt few mins later. Sucks being only 4.8km away from the epicentre. Feels more like a 5. Made the pantry door fly open.

Speaking to one of the GNS guys last week and they said that the deeper earthquakes tend to be felt more at distance than the shallow ones. However for shallow earthquakes, local areas obviously feel these a lot more than they would deep ones. Felt the Taupo 6.0 and the 6.0 out to sea few weeks ago 300km east of Auckland or whatever it was (cant remember). They were both very little 'boat like waves' here.
Ive asked geonet about the Mercalli for here, as I am not happy with it or the ground is screwed....one or the other. My explanation is this: For example, overnight we had a 3.5 "May not be recognised as an earthquake", yet the whole house wobbled and it was more than a little wobble, the sort of wobble you can hear and feel while walking. Then there was a 4 last week "may be mistaken for a heavy truck passing by" - try a heavy truck hitting the house.... Now I am sure that the ground conditions amplify the shaking in CHCH but there must be more to it.
The next interesting point: I live in an unaffected area of CHCH and 2 doors down currently, a digger is working a way. While sitting here at my desk, my desk is literally moving and the house is vibrating, I can feel movement below my feet. I would estimate a local mag 3.4,3.5 feel if i was to describe the intensity of the shaking from the digger, its insane! What is beneath the house in terms of soils etc to me seems to be not a lot, hollow? Supposively it will take some time to fill the gaps underneath again with all the moovement but its insane!

A busy hour for mother nature this afternoon, a series or as scientists referr to as a swarm of quakes struck in the Port Levy to Pigeon Bay a total of 7 recorded even though 9 were on the drums.
Only felt two of them here the first one went on for quite some time strong wobbling but also slightly jolty, that was a 4.8 magnitude then a brief wobble about 20 minutes later which was 4.1 magnitude.
The first lot of jolts i have felt here in about 3 weeks.
4:17pm- 4.8 Magnitude
4:27pm- 3.6 Magnitude
4:30pm- 3.0 Magnitude
4:32pm- 3.0 Magnitude
4:40pm- 2.7 Magnitude
4:48pm- 4.1 Magnitude
4:55pm- 3.2 Magnitude
4:56pm- 2.9 Magnitude
All from canterbury quake live which is a fantastic site.

Nothing felt over here (Indoors , having a cup of tea at the time) but an interesting short series of movements under the ground in the Pigeon Bay area.
Looks to have been a fairly good jolt in Chch 5 mins ago...hope its not too bad
The geonet real time shaking is showing MM7 (damaging) - I hope that is not right!
