The set up over Victoria looks fairly impressive today with a few supercells possible later today.

Looking at weather zones news section and it seems the storms that hit Melbourne caused quite a few blackouts.....

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/vict ... tion/18920

Also of note, it seems an unstable SW flow has hit coastal sections on SA bringing Thunderstorms there also.

Some decent cells firing over NSW north coast now.

BOM havie a warning out and say "4-5cm hail reported near Coolongolook (west of Forster) at 2.00pm.
57.0mm in 1 hour recorded at Nabiac (northwest of Forster) at 2.27pm."

Thats what I call a severe thunderstorm.

With cool 850mb temps in NZ you cant get the loaded gun type build up of instability you see in Australia or USA. But hopefully we can get some storm set ups anyway between now and Christmas. I'm sure we will.

I see that Borroloola has had 76mm of rain today due to passing storms, good totals also in southern WA too with Northam and Denmark getting over 50mm.

It possibly is a dry line Tim. I have only thought about NSW getting a dry line but no doubt other parts of Aussie can get one also.

Yup Strong storm alight!
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:55 pm, a very dangerous thunderstorm was detected on weather radar near the You Yangs and the area west of Werribee. This thunderstorm is moving towards the east to southeast. Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Mordialloc, the area east of Lara and the area south of Werribee by 6:25 pm and Cranbourne, Frankston and Pakenham by 6:55 pm.
Other severe thunderstorms were located near the area north of Meredith. They are forecast to affect Brisbane Ranges, Lara and Werribee by 6:25 pm and Hoppers Crossing, Portarlington and waters off Portarlington by 6:55 pm.
Destructive winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.
Tree damage and flashflooding has been reported near Skipton, golf ball size hail south of Ballarat
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home.
* keep away from creeks and drains.
* do not drive vehicles through flooded areas.
* stay indoors if possible.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* if you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees
* listen to the radio for storm updates
* switch off your computer and electrical appliances
The next warning is due to be issued by 7:00 pm.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central, Mallee, North East, Wimmera and parts of the East Gippsland, South West, Northern Country, North Central and West and South Gippsland districts.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at http://www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 217. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
Reports via Weatherzone Forum of a Wall Cloud coming from that storm.

The Bureau Meteorology says a tropical cyclone may form over the Northern Territory's Top End later this week, they reckon a weak monsoon trough off the coast is expected to develop into a tropical low in the next two days, should be interesting to follow during this long period of boring high pressure we are just entering into.

Even though with the weak Christmas Anticyclone hovvering over NZduring this period, I think that the anticyclone will give chance for that possible TC or Tropical Low or depression, whatever it develops into, to evolve which will make it to move to the east way over the top of Northland or the BOP/ Gisborne area, under the anticylone.

In any case, the event threatening to develop and affect Darwin over Xmas looks much more interesting. Good thing my boss is away until the 9th of Jan or I'd probably already have dented my credit card and headed there.

Different system John, the one you're talking about is developing in the Coral sea,the area of developing low pressure that i'm referring is in the Arafura Sea which now has high chance of it becoming a tropical cyclone on Friday

I wasn't referring to that sytem but the one in the Coral Sea but I see the models have or did downgrade that to a depression rather than developing any further. Havene't checked lately.
