The 5.8 built up and went on longer here as we are closer to the epicentre, but the 6.0 it was like a train was about to slam into the house then everything just went from under me couldnt stand up cupboards flew open along with the items in it etc.

it was very jittery out here, no rumble from what I could hear, but the length of it gave me a feeling that it was an accompanyment of the initial shock just before 2pm.
Lost the internet out here but now it is back on.
Similar event to the 13th June quake, in some ways.
Should be more shakes overnight.

Yeah the drums have been bumped to 8000 so are not reading the smaller ones very well, quite significant damage to the stopbanks of the kaiapoi river apparently.
We had another long rolling jolty one about 20 minutes ago, was a 5.0 offshore from sumner and the second one after the 5.8 was 5.3.

I see the 3.9 at 5:28pm was located in kaiapoi, first one I have seen plotted in that area on quakecrowe. Yet another aftershock as I type.

By the way - Was the 5.8 on the Pegasus bay fault they were talking about that was capable of a 6? The 6.0 looks like its on the Port Hills one again... I can't remember but is the Pegasus bay one the fault that goes through Barbadoes street as well and out to sea or are they seperate?

The pegasus bay fault is further north unfortunatly, i think this is an extension of the port hills fault as i know the port hills fault goes through south shore.
I seen that just about 2 minutes walk from my house the 3.9 what the

The 6.0 started off slow and then briefly went "wham" followed by the slow rocking,nothing compared to you fellas had in CHCH.
I just feel so so sorry for the city that its have to go through it all over again

those shakes really scared the cows a bit here, lots of fun trying to get them on the platform for milking...

I only felt the 6.0 myself as I was in the office tuning the radio back in, nearly fell over when it hit had to grab onto the door frame

Crap day. Piss off faultlines. Santa will NOT be getting a single malt now. Ok here though thank god. Very severe shake that 6.0, the 5.8 pretty nasty here too

Already reported to Geonet on one felt slightly, just before 6am; missed the 6.37am one (walking about) but someone still in bed here felt it. Forward and onward....
Edit to add: that one at 6.37am was a 5.1 according to Geonet's text just received.

I heard an old timer on the radio speaking about a big earthquake in the central North Island mid last century and she said the aftershocks went on for 4 years. So its certainly a time thing, but it does eventually end.

Thanks Steve. Yes I guessed this mornings 5.1 was about a 5. It lasted 20 seconds or so here but I just lay in bed and rode it out as it was like being on a boat in decent size waves. I can deal with those ones.

25 recorded aftershocks since 11pm last night.

Interesting in a way watching the cluster just off Spencerville beach and the ones around port levy where the 5.1 was yesterday morning.
We are feeling alot of these smaller ones quite a different situation as most of the quakes have really been centred away from us and not so local since september 2010.
So even constant 2.9-3.5's we are feeling here, mostly low rumbles and brief wobbling completly different feeling with them being in the water not so jolty unless they get up over 4.0 like last nights one.

Its almost the opposite for here. Greater distance away from here this time for the aftershocks but the odd one is closer and still several a day. We didnt stop rocking for the 18-24 hours after the event but havent felt any today and only 3 in the night. The other aftershock sequences were lethal here.

Only really noticing 3.8 and above.

Another busy night for shakes here, had 2 within 5 minutes of each other if you go onto the quake map nz site i posted further up you can see how widespread through the bay they are just 10km offshore.
4.0,3.8,3.7,4.1,4.1,2.9 .
Nothing major compared to others but we have further new cracking in the ceiling now so that will be another visit from EQC and what not, the old Bank Of New Zealand in Kaiapoi will now have to be demolished too after the roof and walls caved in on friday plus the auction shop behind it.

I was at Woodend when the 2 O'clocker hit today ceryinly felt bigger than 4.8, USGS are saying a 5.3 which sounds about right

Just a rattler here in Merivale, went on a while but not that strong.
