US Storm Chasing 2012

Unread post by 03Stormchaser »

So.... who is going this year?

I wish I was, but heading to the Uk/Europe for 3 months for the Olympics this year.
Ive been given leave from the gf for next year, so if a big group were keen in 2013, start saving!

I see Jacci & Willoughby are going this year ex Darwin. Insufficient time for me to save for this year, however next year I'd be keen if given sufficient time to save.

I'm going to try and make it over there this year.

I see there is a major drought in Texas/Oklahoma atm but I'm guessing that will change in Feb-Apr time frame.

My Mates Lightning Detector in Huntland TN got a good workout, He was under the verge of a Tornado Watch.

Tornado's in the dead of night wouldn't be something I could easily sleep on.

Sad to learn of Andy Gabrielsons' death, he was a great chaser with a name for getting out there and getting the footage.

Just so happens i saw this clip on him yesterday, chasing yesterdays set up in Texas.

Looks like he died in a car crash while returning home from a chase, his vehicle hit by another vehicle which was travelling the wrong way, very sad news.

This storm chaser got caught in the tornado, his car wrecked. He broke the cardinal rule of chasing 'stay out of the tornado'!

Sounds to me like this guy has had a heavy bang to the head in that interview. This style of storm chasing will kill someone eventually, just a matter of time.

TV has prompted many wannabe chasers. The roads in Oklahoma are insane on a good storm day.

Thought I'd throw this up here in the slight chance someone would be interested in joining me and a friend storm chasing the Great Plains during May and early June (or a part of it). We will be hiring a car and driving from Los Angeles while stopping at national parks along the way dependant on storm activity outlooks further east on the plains.

A feature of this trip will be to check out the annular solar eclipse occuring on May 20 from China to southwestern USA, namely New Mexico and the Texas panhandle. The last annular eclipse at sunset in North America was on December 18, 1740!

Costs will be split over fuel, lodging and car hire cost. But ex car hire I have generally found the daily expense spend to be around US$75 if splitting between two and being thrifty with spending on accomodation.

So who's keen? :D

Sounds like that guy was a spotter rather than a chaser. He doesn't really come across as a smart individual tbh

BTW I see mod risk out 2nd March for Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. Again these are going to be fast moving storms moving thru some pretty populated areas. Potential is there for more fatalities sadly.

I think this will go high risk, first of the season

My Friend in Huntland TN, emailed me saying a Damaging tornado has hit between his town and Hunstville Alabama.
He had another tornadic storm to his south which thankfully weakened before reaching him.

Turning into a pretty insane outbreak, High risk was issued so can only hope people to notice of this.
So far there has been 49 Tornado reports (preliminary reports mind you) and reports of fatalities but nothing confirmed yet.
